Porsche Navi: Do not update the PCM map

Posted: July 4, 2022 Updated:

PCM map update

This is the last story of my recent Porsche 911 (992.1) Porsche Communication Management System (PCM) event. * This is a story in PCM 5.0.

In the meantime:

I have written about.

After resetting the PCM to the factory default, I was able to read the driver settings, which had been a problem until then, and I was relieved.

PCM software update notification display

Actually, before, when I was driving in Shizuoka prefecture, a download mark suddenly appeared at the top of the PCM, and there was a display saying "①".

When you touch it, the display that appears is the item "Shizuoka 191.5MB new navigation data" and the selection button "Update start" ↓

But at this time, I was running for a purpose & it was like updating the map data of the place I just visited (Shizuoka prefecture), so I decided "Well, I don't have to do anything now" and do nothing I left it unattended.

Looking back, the decision to do nothing at this time was correct. I want to praise myself at that time.

By the way, when I had the PCM reset at the factory this time, the same download mark was actually displayed again.

This this ↓

At this time, I was just in the parking lot of the Porsche Center, and it was just after resetting the PCM, so I felt really light to the sales person.

"Oh, there seems to be some update on the map of Tokyo, so can I try this too?"

I decided to try this as well.

Because this update seems to be navigation data of the map of Tokyo where I live, well, even if something happens, I am relieved because I am now at the Porsche Center.

The factory reset of the PCM, which I was most afraid of, was completed successfully, and there aren't many scary things anymore. I don't hesitate to press "Start Update".

Automatic map updates are absolutely off

Then, first of all, I was asked "Do you want to update the automatic map (in the future)?", So check "Yes" without thinking about anything and proceed.

* As will be described later, this is a mistake, so be sure to check "No".

The file download will start. On this day, I started downloading at 10:47.

It was stopping occasionally, but it didn't seem to take much time unless the Wi-Fi environment was very bad.

The file size is about 180MB.

It's hard to see because the time display shines a little, but the download 100% was completed at 10:50.

Yeah, it only takes about 3 minutes. Good feeling.

If it doesn't finish, "finish" navigation data installation

When the download is complete, the display will automatically change to "Installing" and the new map file that was just downloaded will begin to be expanded into the PCM navigation data.

The installation started at 10:50.

The installation took longer than the download and was still 33% 7 minutes after it started.

At first, I was wondering if I should wait leisurely, but when I suddenly realized it, it was still 45% 21 minutes after the start.

That's right, this really gets stuck on the way.

It takes a lot of time.

Even after more than 30 minutes from the start, it still stays at 63%, so I was asked to confirm "Something is wrong?"

Navigation data update should not be done

The response from the mechanic is ... Simply put, it's like "I can't do that".

e? Can't you do it? Navi update? ?? ??

For the time being, he said, "Never turn off the ignition during installation", so I was very sorry at the parking lot of the Porsche Center, but I just waited for the installation to be completed with the engine on all the time.

Besides turning off the ignition on the way, it seems that there was no guarantee that the installation would work until the end even if I kept waiting like this (what's that (laughs)), and if it didn't finish, what would it be?

How.

"Maybe the map of Tokyo may disappear"

What?

So what? What did you say now? To the fluttering toroko, even more chasing

"Furthermore, in the worst case, PCM will be completely replaced from the board."

What?

Well, I just exchanged the PCM. What is it? There was a button like that like a land mine (no (laughs)).

This PCM navigation update seems to have a lot of bugs at the moment (as of the end of June 2022), and now it seems that it is waiting for a program (?) To be improved.

Therefore, if the software update of this map is displayed in the future, it is better to contact the Porsche Center and confirm "Can I do it?" Before starting.

I think it's okay if it's been improved (but I don't know when it will be).

I've already started, so when I get here, I just have to hope that "I managed to finish it safely".

By the time we finally reached 99%, the time was already 12:07. It's pretty amazing ^^

On the way, during the installation for about an hour and a half, I just waited for the installation to be completed in 992, so I fell asleep on the way because I had too much free time.

I'm the only one taking a nap in the parking lot of the Porsche Center ^ ^

The other person at the Porsche Center who did not know the situation looked at me sleeping in the parking lot from a distance and said, "Hey, what are you doing there? How long are you going to sleep? Did you come to take a nap?" Must have been thought.

And, if I was killing time by sleeping or Instagramping, finally! !! !! The emotional time came, "Oh oh, it's over !! It's done properly!"

But at the moment when it's over, it's so ruthless that it just says "No updates available", and the screen looks like nothing has happened so far.

The important thing here is to cancel the fact that I first made a mistake and turned "automatic update" to "yes".

Because, if you turn on the automatic map-up-date, the update will start unknowingly, and the installation of this pounding "If it does not end, the PCM itself may die" will start.

Moreover, although it started, the engine cannot be turned off at the end.

If you touch the three lines on the screen, the message "Automatic map update" will appear, so "Remove the check mark" here. This is a relief for the time being.

In my case, it took about an hour and a half this time, but thankfully the map update was installed, so PCM is working fine after that.

However, what I was really lucky about was that this series of events was happening at the Porsche Center.

If I was doing "Yachao" to the techto at my home parking lot, I probably couldn't wait for an hour and a half and turned off the engine on the way, saying "Well, again," and maybe it wasn't. In addition, it was a place where it might be a PCM exchange.

For the time being, if the map update is automatically updated, turn it off for the time being, and check if you can do it at the Porsche Center just in case before starting the update when the update notification comes out. I think it is better to be taken.

And to me, who doesn't understand well, I was so excited, but I don't know at all what the map of Tokyo was updated with this update (laughs).

★ Addition ★
As I received in the comment, it seems that PCM 6.0 has been updated without problems by automatic map update. Therefore, I think that "it is better not to (map update) now" is the story of PCM 5.0 (or earlier? Unknown) ^ ^
