Porsche 911 front tire left and right swap

Posted: April 13, 2022 Updated:

The steering wheel tilts to the left, so I blamed the tires

In conclusion, I've done it. Hehe.

What I did was to replace the left and right front tires of the black Carrera (991.2 Porsche 911 base model Carrera)!

Because for my carreraDriving on the circuit at Porsche's driving schoolAfter that, I had a symptom that "the car is running straight, but the steering is slightly tilted to the left."

At first, it seemed that this stubbornness was due to too much tire residue when driving on the circuit.

But after that, I desperately took the tire scraps ... but it's still tilted.

In fact, from quite a few people already at the very beginning

"If you adjust the alignment, it will be fixed."

I was told, but I still have more

"No, I'm sure I'm running a clockwise FSW and the groove on the left tire is reduced, so it must be tilted!"

I was making a noise with the following hypothesis. I'm sorry I didn't listen to people's advice (laughs).

When I wrote this second hypothesis on this blog, "Maybe it's because of the decrease in the left tire!", I got a comment this time.

The moment I saw the comment I received, it was a scale from my eyes.

The comment is here.

Wow. genius!

I never thought of exchanging the left and right tires. There is no specified direction of rotation for black carrera tires. The moment I got a comment, I already said "That's it !!" (laughs).

It's simple for me to act when I say "That's it!"

I went to swap the left and right tires! !!

picture? Don't do that, just adjust the alignment ^^? Certainly (laughs).

No, but for me this is the hypothesis

"Because the reduction of the left tire is larger, the steering of 911 may be tilted to the left."

I did it because I wanted to know if that was correct or if it had nothing to do with it.

It was said that the rear tires would have almost no effect on the steering tilt, so this time the left and right swaps are only for the front tires.

I checked the rear tires when the car was lifted up, but yeah, the terrible tire scraps are completely gone.

This is the rear tire on the other side. After all, there are no tire scraps anymore.

Now, let's start replacing the front tires.

It's exciting!

Don't forget the locknut.

When asked "Are you there?"I can take it out quicklyI'm proud of it (← I was a person who said "Locknut? What's that?" Until a few years ago ... (laughs)).

Removed, front tire.

I don't mean to change the tires, but the day will come when I ask them to remove the tires.

I also looked at all the removed front tires, but the terrible tire scraps were completely gone without any traces.

When it comes to that, the tire residue is no longer related to the steering tilt.

* Even so, after the steering wheel tilted first and then worked hard to surround the tire scraps, the tilt actually improved a little, so I think there was also tilt due to the tire scraps at first ^ ^

By the way, the work continues ... After swapping the left and right tires, please install it again.

In the case of my Carrera, the Porsche salesman told me in advance that "torque tightening is 160 Newton meters", so I would like to ask the older brother who exchanged the left and right tires for "160 Nm!" I told him that it was tightened to the specified value.

Already perfect.

Did the steering tilt correct by swapping the left and right tires?

Now that the work of swapping the left and right front tires of the Porsche 911 Carrera has been completed, I would like to report the results immediately.

The result is ... well.

Damn!

cormorant.

unfortunately…

The steering was still tilted to the left! !! !!

No! (Tears and tears)! !!

If it was true, I wanted to write with joy and courage, saying, "It's fixed! It's fixed by swapping the left and right tires! After all, it was the difference in the degree of groove reduction!" (Laughs).

I would like to give you detailed results.

Perhaps everyone thinks from the beginning, "No, if it's alignment. The detailed results are already good." But if you've seen this far, please keep an eye on it ^^

First of all, this is before changing the left and right tires.

When I took these pictures, I said, "Move the car straight for a few meters just by creeping at the end, and when you stop and after you stop, you should handle all the steering wheel so that you don't intentionally angle the steering wheel yourself. I try not to touch it.

It's pretty tilted, isn't it? This is Before ↓

And here is the steering after swapping the left and right tires. The conditions for taking a picture are the same place, and I took it in the same way ↓

picture? Can't you tell the difference?

This is this. Look at it properly! !! (Already begging (laughs))

Before on the left and After on the right. understand? ?? The tilt will be a little less! !! !! hey?

"It's forcible. It doesn't change much." I heard it (angry)!

I thought that would be said (who (laughs)), so I measured the angle properly. The steering tilt is measured using a digital protractor.

When measuring, it is measured according to the straight line between this black and red color of the crest.

This is before the left and right tires are replaced. The measurement was taken in the state when the above picture was taken ↓

The left tilt of the steering before changing tires is 6.1 degrees. Of course, I think there will be some camera shake, so it's usually.

And here is after swapping the left and right tires.

The steering angle is ... 2.5 degrees! !! It's decreasing a lot! !! Right ^^?

However, I couldn't believe it for a moment, and said, "No, I might have unknowingly returned the steering a little."

Even when I parked in the back at my home parking lot at the end, the steering was constant and lowered while keeping the car straight at the end, so when I measured it at the last minute, it was 3.3 degrees.

Even if there was some camera shake, the tilt was about 6 degrees before the left and right tires were swapped, but after the left and right swaps, the tilt was reduced to about 3 degrees.

What's amazing is that the human (my?) Brain says, "I'm very worried if a straight object is tilted at only 2.5 degrees, but the angle at which it bends is 2.5 degrees or 6 degrees. I don't really understand the difference. "

Therefore, although the inclination has improved considerably, the conclusion is that it is "worrisome" because it is still bent about 3 degrees.

It was no good (laughs).

Sensor after swapping left and right tires

By the way, if you swap the left and right tires, the sensor may give an error, so I was told to reset it at that time, but the sensor worked even after swapping the left and right tires ^ ^

Black Carrera, who can deal with such things, is really the best (eh? I'm just forced to do it?).

Porsche 911 Steering tilt improvement (?) Flow

The steering tilt of this Porsche 911 is:

  • The steering was tilted to the left because there were a lot of tire scraps.
  • When the tire scraps were removed, the inclination became a little better.
  • After that, when I measured the remaining groove of the tire, the number of the left tire was reduced, so I thought that was the reason why the steering was still tilted to the left.
  • After swapping the left and right front tires, the steering tilt improved from about 6 degrees to about 3 degrees.

I came to the conclusion.

The remaining tilt of about 3 degrees is ... Next time, I would like you to adjust the alignment after changing the tires. ← So this is the correct answer from the beginning.

Fufufu, some people may think, "What are you doing in vain?", But I just wanted to try it.

At least, I am very satisfied with the fact that "improvement of about 3 degrees = the steering tilt was 3 degrees due to the difference between the left and right tires".

Ah, it was fun. Thank you for staying with us until the end!

* It's a test from various hypotheses (laughs), so I hope you can understand it as a result of my play ^ ^

After all, a sensor error occurred at a later date, so click here for more → How to reset the tire pressure sensor of Porsche 911

★ Addition ★ (2022.4.25)
I'm sorry, I originally wrote that the torque tightening was 130Nm in the text, but since it was a mistake, I rewrote it to 160Nm so that there is no misunderstanding by other people in the future. Thank you for pointing out in the comments! !!

This is the time when I had you tighten the torque (160Nm) at the Porsche center at a later date ^ ^! ↓
