New generation Porsche Communication Management (PCM) for 911, Taycan, Panamera, and Cayenne: Improved performance and expanded digital ecosystem

Posted: Posted:

Porsche has announced the introduction of a new generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM) for its 911, Taycan, Panamera, and Cayenne models.

The new hardware platform, Porsche Digital Interaction, and expanded digital ecosystem (an environment where vehicles, smartphones, apps, and digital services interact with each other) will enable improved performance and a consistent user experience across multiple model lines.

Improving performance in everyday digital use

At the heart of the new hardware is a state-of-the-art system-on-a-chip architecture with up to five times the computing power of the previous generation.

This will allow customers to benefit from faster system startup, reduced loading times, and smoother operation.

Indeed, in my experience, the PCM startup of the 992.1 Cabriolet is slow and sometimes takes a while to load, so "faster startup and reduced loading time" would be a welcome improvement.

However, in my case, the loading speeds aren't that slow except for 992.1, so the newer ones are actually the ones with problems... (Speaking of which, the screen in GT4 RS freezes occasionally (lol)).

Furthermore, the newly announced PCM allows for more convenient simultaneous use of multiple applications, and since applications continue to run in the background, switching between them will result in faster access.

At the same time, this new architecture also serves as a technological foundation for future digital features and continuous evolution, allowing for further software and some features to be improved even after delivery through comprehensive over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Porsche Digital Interaction delivers a consistent user experience.

Through Porsche Digital Interaction, the design and operating mechanisms introduced in the Cayenne Electric are now being extended to the 911, Taycan, Panamera, and all Cayenne models equipped with internal combustion and hybrid powertrains.

This combines modern UX/UI design, a consistent operating mechanism, and extensive personalization settings, resulting in a user-friendly layout, quick response, and unified operation that creates a cohesive digital experience across various displays.

At the heart of Porsche Digital Interaction is a high-quality, freely rotatable 3D model of a vehicle that replicates the actual car's body color.

This virtual vehicle reportedly allows for intuitive and direct access to some vehicle functions and settings.

Furthermore, customers can choose from five themes and customize widgets, allowing them to tailor their in-car digital experience to their preferences.

New navigation and AI-powered voice pilot

Navigation Plus employs cutting-edge mapping technology and a new 3D map display, with online map data and real-time traffic information assisting with route guidance.

For all-electric vehicles, a Porsche charging planner will schedule stops for charging and also take into account battery preconditioning (prior adjustments for charging).

The enhanced Voice Pilot reportedly runs on AI based on a large-scale language model, enabling the system to process natural language, requests involving multiple steps, and additional questions.

Navigation, some vehicle functions, media, and some apps can be controlled by voice, and new software versions and some enhancements will be delivered directly to the vehicle via over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Seamlessly integrated digital services

With its new platform, Porsche is consistently pursuing a strategy of seamlessly integrating the Porsche ecosystem with the customer's own digital ecosystem.

By integrating vehicles, smartphones, and apps and services from external service providers through a standardized interface, a unified digital experience is created.

The App Center allows Porsche and third-party apps to be directly integrated into vehicles, and customers can select, download, and update apps individually.

The apps and services offered include audio and video streaming, navigation, and parking and charging services, and the lineup is said to be continuously expanding.

Furthermore, it will be possible to use Apple Music directly in the car for the first time through the Porsche App Center.

Combined with Bose® and Burmester® 3D high-end surround sound systems, the Apple Music platform now supports Dolby Atmos®.

Other compatible apps can also utilize Dolby Atmos via Apple CarPlay if they support this feature.

*The provision of Apple Music spatial audio with Dolby Atmos via the Porsche App Center is limited to select Connect-enabled markets. An Apple Music subscription and a Dolby Atmos-compatible sound system are required to use this service.

Smartphone connectivity enables a deeper level of integration, including map display on the instrument panel and EV-specific route guidance with battery preconditioning (※This will be available in some markets, but the announcement did not specify whether it will be available in the Japanese market).

The new generation of infotainment, including Porsche Digital Interaction, announced today will be gradually introduced to newly produced vehicles in the 911, Taycan, Panamera, and Cayenne model lines (availability may vary depending on market, model, production date, and equipment).

To be honest, I didn't have very high expectations for PCM (sorry!), but I'd like to think, "Wow, this is so much better!" with this new PCM.
