When a tunnel is detected, the setting automatically switches to tunnel driving mode.
Porsche has once again filed an interesting patent application, this time for "Tunnel Mode."
Porsche says that when driving through a tunnel:
- People who like the unique noises that occur in tunnels
- People who find the noise of vehicles traveling in tunnels annoying
It seems that there are many issues, and it will be possible to set up tunnel mode to deal with these.

When a vehicle is detected entering a tunnel, the vehicle first notifies the driver.
The mode previously set by the driver will then be activated.
There are two settings to choose from, and the operation of each mode is briefly outlined below:
Mode 1: For those who want to enjoy the sounds inside a tunnel
- Automatically lowers windows slightly just before entering a tunnel to let in outside reverberations (in dry weather)
- If the outside temperature is low, the heating and seat heaters will automatically turn on.
- Activate Sport Mode
- Exhaust valve open
- Automatically downshifts the transmission by one
- For electric vehicles, it is also possible to play synthetic engine sounds (multiple options available)
- For Cabriolet drivers, a notice is displayed to open the car at the rest area before the tunnel.
- It is also possible to synthesize artificial reverberation while passing through a tunnel.
Mode 2: For those who want to reduce noise in tunnels
- Uses a microphone to detect external noise in the tunnel and performs noise cancellation.
- Dramatically reduces external noise while passing through tunnels, maintaining a quiet space
It seems to be something like this.
You can activate whichever mode you prefer (1st or 2nd), or of course you don't have to use it.

Wow, when you enter a tunnel, it automatically downshifts, activates sport mode, and even opens the valves!... I mean, a certain number of people do this manually when entering a tunnel (lol), but this car does it all automatically.
Personally, I think it's interesting that in the case of an open car, when a tunnel is approaching, the driver is notified, "A tunnel is coming! Open the roof!"
On the other hand, it's nice that there's a mode for people who want it quieter.
These patent applications do not necessarily mean that the technology will be implemented, so it is unclear whether this tunnel mode will be available in the future, or if so, in which models and in what form. However, if it does appear, I might want to try it out.
