For Walter Röhrl, the Carrera GT is the best car

Walter Röhrl talks about the Carrera GT

I came across an article in the American car magazine "Road & Track" in which Walter Röhrl talked about the Porsche Carrera GT, so I took a look at it.

Due to Porsche's decision to cancel its previously planned LMP racing program, the Carrera GT is built around the V-10 engine from that cancelled car.

At this time Walter had already won two World Rally Championship titles and had begun a second career as a development driver for Porsche.

Walter Röhrl, who was involved in the development of the Carrera GT from the beginning

Walter calls the Carrera GT his masterpiece, and he spoke about it today, so I'd like to take a look at what he said (sorry for the rough translation ^^):

  • Is the Carrera GT in the top 20 greatest cars of all time? Absolutely. No, it's not even in my top 20, it's number one.
  • I always tell people, if I could only have one car, it would be the Carrera GT.
  • The Carrera GT is the first sports car that I have been involved in developing, from the very beginning.
  • My work at Porsche has always been about developing and completing cars from the 80-90%, but the Carrera GT was already sitting there as soon as the first rolling chassis was completed.
  • At first, there were problems.
  • The car suddenly loses grip, and unless you can steer really quickly, it's too late
  • The Nürburgring, where we mainly drove during development, has no room for error.
  • Our goal was always to have a chance to get the car back under control if someone went over the limit, which is not an easy thing to do with a 1,380kg car and 612hp.
  • During development, the boundaries between grip and slip were very sharp, so we pushed really hard with the Michelin tyres.
  • We tried 10 different constructions before we finally got a tire we were happy with.
  • For me, the Carrera GT is the perfect car for normal roads, especially tight corners.
  • The steering is incredibly precise and really moves the way you want it to.
  • You might want a bit more downforce on the track, but the low center of gravity makes it the perfect car for winding mountain roads. It gives you so many emotions.
  • The ceramic clutch was a bit difficult for many to operate.
  • When the Carrera GT was released, there wasn't a single journalist at the launch who didn't stall the Carrera GT.
  • One customer brought his car to the workshop three times and said, "This clutch isn't working."
  • After he brought the car back for the third time, the customer's workshop said, "Let Walter drive it. If he says something's wrong, we'll believe it." But of course the clutch was perfect and there were no issues. The customer ended up selling the car.
  • So I said, "If you're really going to sell it, I'll buy it," but then someone came along who was willing to pay more, so they bought it.
  • I never owned a Carrera GT, by the time I really wanted one the prices had gone up too much... and it was too late
  • Is the Carrera GT a scary car? I don't think so. Because when people have accidents, there's always a reason for them if you analyze them.
  • If you jump into a Carrera GT with cold tires and drive just a few hundred meters, you can't say that the tires are in perfect condition, right?
  • What do you like about the Carrera GT? The sound is number one.
  • The sound of the Carrera GT reminds me of when I was watching F1 in Monte Carlo and the cars went through a tunnel.
  • When you rev it up to the limit, you feel like a race driver sitting in a Carrera GT.

The Carrera GT is Walter's number one car, and it is also the masterpiece of all the Porsches he has been involved in developing.

Unfortunately, the Carrera GT is currently under recall, and all Carrera GTs around the world are unable to be driven, but I hope that a solution will be implemented soon so that we can see the Carrera GT running again.
