Recall for lightweight glass of Porsche 911 (MY20-24) in the United States, perhaps related to the 992's glass fogging problem?

Possibility of windows popping out in case of accident (2020-2024 models): 8,100 Porsche 911s recalled in the United States

At the moment (March 6, 2024), this is only a story in the United States, but due to a manufacturing error, the Porsche 911's windshield and rear glass may not be properly attached to the vehicle and may come off. Approximately 8,100 2020-2024 Porsche 911s have been subject to a recall.

Porsche first noticed this in November 2023 when it received a report that there was a problem with the visibility of the 911.

Hmm?

Isn't that related to the problem that 992 owners have been having trouble with, which I've written about several times before, ``The windshield keeps fogging up''?

Further investigation revealed 15 warranty claims related to windshield fogging and other optical defects.

No, no, no, it's not even 15...I thought about it, but it might just be that the number of warranty claims was small.

I certainly didn't ask for the glass to be replaced because I thought, ``Even if I get the glass replaced under warranty, if the glass is the same after the replacement, it might not solve the problem after all.'' I don't think most people were like that either. It's possible.

Pilkington San Salvo's glass is the problem (as expected!)

Now, Porsche received these reports and investigated further and found that the glass supplier, Pilkington San Salvo, may have not carried out the cleaning process correctly, resulting in the windows not being manufactured to specifications. It has been determined that there is.

Oooh. Pilkington San Salvo Company.

This is it! ! The front window of my Carrera T (992/MY23), which gets cloudy all the time, is "Pilkington 43R-012635" ↓

As I wrote before (Reference: Measures against tape marks on the windshield of the 992 Porsche 911 are impossible.), Of my three 911s, the ones that have fogging are MY21 (not that bad) and MY23 (bad), and the 991.2 911 didn't have any fogging problems.

When checking the manufacturers of the three windshields, the two that were found to be foggy were made by Pilkington San Salvo:

  • No cloudy weather:MY17 (991.2) black Carrera windshield is "Saint-Gobain Sekurit 43R-002687"
  • Slightly cloudy:MY21 (992.1) cabriolet windshield is "PILKINGTON 43R-001586"
  • Very cloudy:MY23(992.1) Carrera T's windshield is "PILKINGTON 43R-012635"

This recall is due to the fact that the lightweight glass may not be properly bonded to the body as a result of the glass not being manufactured according to specifications. "Not doing it correctly" may be another major problem with the clouding/tape trace problem.

At the moment, it seems that there are no confirmed cases of the windshield suddenly coming off the body, but there have been reports of excessive wind noise while driving and signs of water leaks. It seems better to be careful.

This recall is related to safety, as Porsche cannot guarantee that the windshield will operate as expected in the event of an accident, and the glass may be too loose to protect the airbag safely. This is because it may not be effective.

In the United States, we will begin contacting owners of affected vehicles from April 26, 2024, and dealers will replace both the front and rear windows as necessary.

The new glass will go through an improved cleaning procedure that incorporates pumice powder to strengthen its adhesion to the vehicle.

At this time, this issue has not yet been listed on the list of recalls in Japan, but I think this vehicle will probably be recalled in Japan as well.

No, I actually wish it would be recalled...

Please try to solve the problem of glass fogging all at once. I would like to wait for the announcement in Japan.

By the way, I have a film on my rear glass, but what will happen if I have to replace the glass due to a recall? ?

As for reapplying the film, I guess I'll have to do it myself. I don't like that. In my case, the rear glass is so dark with the film that I can't even tell if it's cloudy (lol), so I guess I won't have to replace the rear glass any time soon.

I wonder what will happen.
