The slant-nose Porsche 911 may be making a comeback

What is Porsche's slant nose?

There has been talk in the foreign media about the possibility of a revival of the slant-nose Porsche 911, but since I still don't have much knowledge about Porsche, I'd like to start by clarifying what a slant-nose Porsche is.

In Porsche terms, the slant nose does not refer to the round headlights found on the front of the car as on a typical Porsche 911, but rather to a flat, angled nose shape with the front design slanted diagonally.

So, what happens to those cute round eyes (headlights)? Well, it turns out that the headlights on the slant nose are retractable, meaning they can be stored away.

What, it's retractable!

If the slant nose of the Porsche 911 were to return, would two Porsches be able to flash their headlights in a blink of an eye when passing each other on the street?

That's something I aspire to!! (※It's not guaranteed to be possible, it's just my imagination (lol))

The trademarks "Porsche Flachbau" and "Flachbau RS"

So why have rumors suddenly started to circulate that this slant-nose 911 might be making a comeback? The key word is "Flachbau."

Flachbau is a German word known as Slantnose in English, which means "flat structure."

This story began when a rumor spread that a request for use of the word Flachbau had been submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office in early May 2025 as "Porsche Flachbau" and "Flachbau RS."

Indeed, if such a word is trademarked, it could be seen as a preparation for Porsche to use the word in the future.

What's more, the origins of this slant nose date back to the Porsche Motorsport 935 race car. In 1981, Kremer Racing developed a body kit for a roadworthy car to recreate its look, and a year later, Mansour Ojjeh, owner of TAG Heuer, asked Porsche to build a roadworthy 935.

The resulting project was based on the 930 Turbo and made extensive use of bespoke hardware.

The car proved so popular among enthusiasts that Porsche began selling the flat-fender look as part of the Sonderwunsch program in 1986.

By the way, the price of the Sonderwunsch flat fender package was apparently quite high, with the 60% added on top of the standard 930 price.

However, in the end, 948 cars were converted to slant-nose specifications (160 of which were sent to the United States).

Could be one of the last special edition cars based on Porsche heritage design

Despite its high price, this specification (slant nose) was popular, and the key word here is that this specification was popular (if we can call it that) in the '80s.

That's right, Porsche has already announced three of the four special edition cars it plans to release based on its Heritage Design strategy:

  • 1st car: 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition, inspired by the style of the 1950s and early 1960s
  • 2nd car: 911 Sport Classic, a revival of the style from the 1960s to the early 1970s
  • 3rd car: 911 Spirit 70, the epitome of the 1970s and early 1980s

Furthermore, at the end of the video released when this third 911 Spirit 70 was announced, the words "to be continued..." appear along with footage of a cassette tape titled "80's MIX."

Well, the concept of the fourth and final 911 in the Heritage Strategy series will follow the lead of the previous three cars and judging from this video, it is almost certain that the theme will be the 1980s, and the trademarked Flachbau (slant nose) is a car that symbolizes the 1980s.

So, does this mean that the fourth Heritage model will be a slant nose? And since the RS is also trademarked, do they plan to release a slant nose RS model as well?

A slant-nose car based on the 911 GT3 or GT3 RS?

Of course, these are still just rumors and my own imagination, so there is a possibility that something completely different will come out.

But maybe I'll wait a bit longer.

...That said, the first 911 Speedster was released in the 1980s, so I thought it might be some kind of Speedster as the fourth Heritage model, so I wonder what will happen.

It's fun thinking about different things, so I'm looking forward to the announcement!
