The last air-cooled 911 (993 Turbo) to leave the factory

Last month, what was said to be the last air-cooled Porsche 911 to leave the factory was put up for auction, selling for $818,000 (approximately 121 million yen).

The car that was sold was a 1998 Porsche 911 Turbo (Coupe) with chassis number "WP0ZZZ99ZWS370750."

This 911, known as the 993 model, rolled off the factory assembly line on March 27, 1998, four days before production of the air-cooled 911 was scheduled to end.

So, although this 911 was not the last air-cooled 911 produced, it is said to be the last air-cooled 911 to leave the factory.

Incidentally, the last air-cooled 911 produced was the Carrera 4S, which went to Jerry Seinfeld.

The reason why this 911 was sold for such a high price is not just because it was the last air-cooled 911 to leave the factory, but also because it was heavily customized.

After production at the factory, it was sent to the Sonderwunsch department where it underwent various customizations over a period of six months, including a rare WLS 2 upgrade that increased the engine's power to 444 horsepower.

...At this point, I didn't know what "WLS 2" meant, so I looked it up and found out that "WLS" stands for Werksleistungssteigerung in German, which refers to an automaker tuning a car's engine performance in the factory to increase power and torque.

And "WLS 2" appears to refer to an optional package that will further increase engine power.

The WLS 2 installed on this car also includes a strut brace, twin tailpipes, an additional oil cooler, and a 92-liter fuel tank, making it a car that is capable of delivering serious performance.

Sonderwunsch added night blue leather to the interior, and the dial and other parts were also finished in blue.

The dashboard features a plaque that reads "In Memoriam Prof. Ferry Porsche," and the side sills have the words "The Last Waltz."

The Last Waltz...meaning the last dance, is a romantic expression that symbolizes the end (in this case, an air-cooled one).

And one other very important thing: the car also comes with a letter of intent certifying it as the last air-cooled 911 to leave the factory.

However, this is written as "Letter," and when you look at the photo of this 911, you can see that it has a plate attached that reads something like "Today, xxx received the last classic Porsche 911 (993 Turbo) equipped with an air-cooled boxer engine. September 25th, 1998," so perhaps this is what it is referring to?

So even though this 911 was built a little before the last air-cooled 911, it was also the last to leave the factory?

I think that in a sense it can be said that this 911 is very lucky to have such historical value (?) due to just that brief moment of timing.
