993 Porsche 911 Speedster built under the Sonderwunsch program

The 993 911 Speedster, which does not exist as a commercially available model

I still don't know much about Porsches from the air-cooled era, but this time I was able to say, "Oh, so that's how it was."

That is, there was no Speedster in the 993 Porsche 911. I had never thought of that... (sorry).

Although there was no 993 Speedster available for general sale, only two of these models were ever made (three, to be precise, as one was rebuilt as part of a factory restoration).

One of the two cars built was built in 1995 by the Exclusive department for Ferdinand Alexander Porsche in green, with 17-inch alloy wheels and a Tiptronic gearbox, based on a Carrera body (now in a museum).

The other was built in 2001 for American actor/comedian and known Porsche collector Jerry Seinfeld, based on one of the last 993 Cabriolets from 1998 (18-inch wheels, Turbo Wide 4S model, silver color).

Now, it has been announced that Porsche has built a third (actually fourth) 993-type 911 Speedster through the Sonderwunsch program for Luca Trazzi, an Italian designer who is currently active mainly in Milan and China.

This is Luca

This car will also be unveiled at this year's Monterey Car Week (August 9-18, 2024) in California.

This car is based on the 1994 993 911 Carrera Cabriolet and took more than three years to build. In fact, a life-size design model of the Speedster was even made during the production process.

Luca, who ordered this car, is also a designer, so he had a sketchbook full of drafts and sketches, and a clear idea for the project. Although the production was difficult, he seemed to be able to work happily and cooperatively with the team that designs and creates Porsche cars.

Visit the Porsche manufacturing process with Works ID

Here's another thing I didn't know.

Perhaps it is because this project is so big that Luca is the only one who has been involved, but apparently he was issued a works ID during the project, which allowed him to visit the Porsche factory many times.

I wonder if I can get a works ID if I do a Sonderwunsch? Actually, I can't do a Sonderwunsch in the first place, but it's kind of exciting ^^

Luca used this Works ID to watch his Speedster being worked on in the paint shop. That's cool. He can get in to that kind of place.

By the way, speaking of paint, the body color of this car is named Otto Yellow.PTS Plus ColorApparently, Otto is the name of Luca's dog.

The rear lid and windshield are said to be Speedster features, and are surrounded only by a thin black frame.

The side mirrors are black cones, a classic design feature of 1960s sports cars.

The lights are the four-bulb daytime running lights seen on modern Porsches.

The bodywork lines on the rear lid were apparently designed by Luca.

The 18-inch turbo-design alloy wheels are painted black with a thin yellow line.

There is a black stone guard in front of the rear tire, which is said to be a functional design element and a striking feature on other Speedster generations.

The door handles are black and blend in with the air intakes in the front spoiler.

The sporty look was created by Sonderwunsch specialists, who were inspired by the front spoiler, side skirts and rear fenders of the 993. The indicators, taillights and light strips have all been reinterpreted.

The interior is dominated by black leather with yellow decorative stitching, and the Speedster logo is embroidered on the headrests.

The seat center features a yellow and black checkered pattern, which is hand-sewn and sewn, making it a masterpiece of craftsmanship.

The same pattern is featured on the leather-covered front luggage compartment, car cover and matching touring bags.

Carbon elements are used on the dashboard, center console, handbrake lever, and shift lever, as well as the seat backs.

This inner handle is super cute!

Additionally, this car comes with "Otto Yellow" illuminated carbon door sill trims with individual logos.

Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM)It also comes equipped with cutting-edge infotainment with navigation and Apple CarPlay.

Attention to detail is evident in the power window switches, and there's even a one-off gold badge on the dashboard.

As for the car's performance, the engine, chassis, steering and brake system are said to be those of the 993 911 Carrera RS, and the air-cooled, flat-six engine is 3.8L and produces 221kW/300PS.

How far will Porsche take the Sonderwunsch?

This story is about how "the Sonderwunsch program created the 993 Speedster, a model that practically did not exist as a Porsche model," but... well, um, I'm sorry, to be honest, I wasn't all that impressed.

Of course, this car was Luca's dream car and it's wonderful that he was able to make that dream come true, so I have no intention of criticizing his car at all.

However, things like "PTS has expanded the color options" and "PTS Plus now allows you to create your own favorite colors", or you can customize it a little with a Sonderwunsch and add an original logo, and I think that these things show "individuality" and "playfulness", and that's a good thing.

But to me, the idea that "if you pay money, they'll make something that Porsche doesn't have as a model" is a bit off.

If that becomes possible, then it seems like anything could happen, like, "We have plenty of money, so let's just make an open-top Macan."

Of course, Porsche has to give its OK for all requests in the first place, and I don't think they'll accept everything just because you offer them money.

Perhaps the decision was made this time too because two (or three) had already been made in the past.

Sonderwunsch's motto is "You dream it. We build it."

I found myself wondering about the program, which allows people to create things that Porsche has not even produced as models, but perhaps that is because I don't think I will ever have a completely one-of-a-kind car made for me through the Sonderwunsch.

If Porsche suddenly said to me, "Well, I guess I have no choice, so you can do whatever you want as a special favor!" then I'd just do whatever I wanted (laughs).
