The new Porsche Cayenne EV will be able to charge wirelessly

The new Cayenne EV will be the first to feature wireless charging

Smartphones can now be charged simply by placing them on a wireless charger, so recently cars have been making spaces for smartphones, and some even have a function that automatically starts wireless charging when the smartphone is placed there.

According to Porsche's announcement, the next Cayenne EV will be the first to feature this "wireless charging function."

No, this isn't about charging your smartphone in the car, it's about being able to charge the Cayenne itself wirelessly.

Finally, Porsche will be able to charge wirelessly!

This time, Porsche has prepared an 11kW charging system with a one-box base plate for battery electric vehicles.

The term "one-box" apparently means that there is no need to install a wall box or control unit other than the floor plate installed in the parking lot.

This floor plate will be available for sale at the Porsche Center/Porsche Shop online store in 2026, and its first unveiling will be at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich. The world premiere of the new Cayenne EV is scheduled for the end of 2025

The prototype unveiled at the IAA Mobility Show is coated with fluorescent paint.

The newly announced contactless charging system boasts a maximum charging output of 11kW, achieving performance equivalent to wired AC charging.

The energy transfer efficiency from the power grid to the battery is up to 90%.

The great potential of contactless charging

According to Porsche's analysis, approximately 751 TP1T of Porsche electric vehicles are charged at home. Therefore, if wireless charging becomes possible, it is thought that plates can be installed in garages, carports, or outdoor parking spaces, making it easier to charge electric Porsches.

Well, it's certainly true that if you can just park your car on the designated plate and it will charge, rather than having to park it every time you come home and plug in the cable, it would be much easier and more convenient in your daily life.

Porsche's wireless charging floor plate is 117cm long, 78cm wide and 6cm high.

It can also be installed in a garage, carport, or outdoor parking space, and if ordered, an electrician will install and operate the wireless floor plate (although we are not sure if this is available in Japan at this time).

To enable wireless charging, the vehicle also needs hardware, but the new Cayenne Electric (EV Cayenne), which will be announced soon and has the internal abbreviation "E4," will be available with Porsche Wireless Charging pre-installed as an option.

The receiving unit is located on the vehicle's underbody between all wheels, protected from flying stones and weather.

The charging process is as simple as parking the Cayenne on the floor plate.

The contactless energy transmission between the two charging units is apparently carried out over a distance of just a few centimetres, so when parked on this plate, the Cayenne will automatically lower its height.

The base plate is equipped with built-in motion sensors and foreign object detection, so the charging process will automatically be interrupted if a living creature gets between the vehicle and the floor plate or if a metal object is placed on the plate and becomes hot.

Even if a cat thinks, "This looks like a warm place," and crawls onto the plate underneath the Cayenne, the charging process will be interrupted, so the cat will not be harmed... but if they sleep on the plate until morning, they won't be able to charge (lol).

Porsche Wireless Charging is integrated into the My Porsche app, making it possible to track the charging process, among other things.

When parking the Cayenne on the plate, the Surround View Parking function's dedicated view makes it easy to guide the Cayenne to the optimal charging position. Once the car is parked in the parking position on the plate and the parking brake is applied, the charging process begins.

Features already available with AC charging, such as timer charging with preconditioning, are also available with wireless charging.

The floor plate weighs approximately 50 kg, and it comes standard with LTE and WLAN modules, with remote software updates and infrastructure support guaranteed in the future.

This wireless charging will first be introduced in Europe in 2026, and will then be rolled out to other markets around the world.

How wireless charging works

Wireless charging (induction charging) is a method used in smartphones and electric toothbrushes, and uses a magnetic field to send electricity through the air.

  • Power transmission coil on the floor: Inside the charging floor is a power transmission coil made of copper wire and ferrite, which generates a magnetic field when an alternating current is passed through it.
  • Vehicle-side receiving coil: There is a receiving coil on the bottom of the car, which receives electricity from this magnetic field. The received current remains AC, so it is converted to DC by a rectifier and charged into the car's high-voltage battery.
  • Parking guidance: Porsche's system uses ultra-wideband technology to pinpoint the optimal position for the car on the floorboard. Once the car is in the right position, the driver is notified and charging begins automatically.

Weatherproof and thoroughly tested

The wireless charging base plate is designed to withstand rain and snow, making it suitable for outdoor use. All live parts are protected, ensuring safety and preventing major damage even if a car drives over the plate.

The electromagnetic waves generated during charging are limited to the underside of the vehicle, minimizing the impact on the surrounding area. Furthermore, its durability has been confirmed through rigorous testing, including by TÜV Süd (a third-party testing, inspection, and certification organization based in Germany), and it has also obtained CE certification (EU standards) and UL certification (US standards).

This proves that the product meets international standards in terms of both safety and environmental protection.

The new Cayenne is also said to have extremely high charging performance, even for those who want to travel long distances as quickly as possible. The Macan already boasts the highest level in its segment at 270kW, and the Taycan at 320kW, but the new Cayenne surpasses that in terms of fast charging, supporting up to 400kW with direct current (DC) charging.

This means that the Cayenne can be charged quickly and optimally using facilities such as the Porsche Charging Lounge.

A prototype camouflaged with fluorescent paint

When the prototype of the new Cayenne EV was officially unveiled for the first time in the UK the other day, it attracted a lot of attention for its flashy fluorescent camouflage wrapping, but the car shown at IAA Mobility in Munich this time is said to be sporting an innovative fluorescent paint scheme that further develops the design.

When an electric current flows, vibrant colors appear on the body surface, revealing a dynamic camouflage pattern designed by Style Porsche.

Some painted areas are intentionally left dark, and the five colors from blue to violet can be controlled to glow as desired.

This special coating is made up of more than 25 extremely thin layers, including conductive primers, electrode layers, insulating layers, and electroluminescent materials containing luminescent pigments, which emit light when an alternating current is applied.

On top of that, more than 15 layers of clear coat are layered on top of that, and a total of 100 liters of clear paint is used.

The finishing process required more than 30 polishing processes and over 500 meters of cable wiring, so it seems that painting this special EV Cayenne prototype took an enormous amount of effort.

This prototype is scheduled to be unveiled for the first time at the IAA Mobility event in Munich from September 9th to 14th, 2025, so I'd like to see some footage if it comes out.
