How to check if your Porsche911 (992) has has a GPF or not
A while ago"What happened to 992? I can't stop laughing from the morningI wrote an article, but at that time the story spread in various ways with the people who saw the blog, and it has nothing to do with the content of the article (laugh), but in the story of the gasoline party curate filter (GPF) became.
And in the comment section of the article at that time, I received a comment saying "I confirmed that the current 992 is already equipped with GPF."
In addition to the comments from this person, recently, individual messages from other people also said, "It seems that the 992 from the 2021 model has a GPF, is that true? Rika's 992 I've also been asked the question, "Do you have a GPF?"
Until now, I was confident that "My 992 doesn't have GPF!" (← I don't know where the confidence came from (laughs)), but when I started listening like that I'm getting anxious little by little.
"Maybe my 992 already has a GPF ?!"
Well, GPF is a regulatory measure, so even if my 992 has a GPF, it can't be helped, so at that time I'm sure that "Oh, my 992 is the most advanced car in the era." I think it was (always positive (laughs)).
But, after all, it's my feeling that my Porsche 911 Carrera is a 2021 model (MY21), but it doesn't sound like it has a GPF.
Hmm.
But that's just my own belief, and I'm getting tired of spending time without knowing if my 911 has a GPF or not.
As always, if you want to know, it won't stop anymore ^^
So I checked it. Does my Porsche have a GPF or not?
And like me, if you are thinking "I want to know if my Porsche 911 has a GPF", I thought it would be convenient if I could easily check it myself in the future, so this time I would like to write about "how to tell for yourself whether or not GPF is attached".
What is Porsche GPF (Porsche 911 (992))
First of all, what is GPF? However, GPF stands for Gasoline Particulate Filter. In Europe, it is also called PPF (Petrol Particulate Filter).
This GPF / PPF (* here referred to as GPF) is a filter that removes particulate matter emitted from direct injection gasoline engines, and by installing this GPF Porsche complies with the latest emission standards, And it is said that they are seeking further improvement in performance.
Porsche has improved its power performance even more than before in creating the new 911 type 992, but then there was a problem that it could not clear the emission regulations in Europe (or in other countries). Therefore, this GPF was decided to be attached as one of the countermeasures.
By the way, in the United States and Japan, it was okay not to attach this GPF yet, so even after the announcement of 992, there was no GPF attached to the 911 (992.1) coming into the United States and Japan.
However, from the time 992.1 became the 2021 model, I began to hear the story that "GPF came to follow" in the United States or Japan ... and that led to this question.
"Sound" is regarded as a big thing that changes depending on whether or not this GPF is attached. Yes, it's a sound.
Actually, I don't know how much it will change, but for the time being, can I enjoy the better Porsche exhaust sound with no filter than with it? I feel that.
Porsche 992.1 GPF shape
Let's take a look.
This is the one equipped with the 992 type 911 GPF officially released by Porsche ↓
A filter is built in this enlarged part ↓
And this one is also equipped with 992.1 GPF, but this is for sports exhaust.
My 992 is a sports exhaust, so if my 992 has a GPF, that means it has this ↓
Let's take a look at the actual car.
Here is a view of my 992 Carrera from below ↓
I will go further.
This is on the right side of the front of the car, that is, under the passenger seat side in the case of my car with right-hand drive ↓
Hmm, I can see something chubby at the end of the pipe ↓
This is the left side (that is, under the driver's seat of my car with right-hand drive) ↓
Well, I don't know if this chubby thing is GPF or what.
Compared with the model photo with GPF installed, my final judgment as an amateur was that my 992 was "a car without GPF". In other words, there is no GPF.
However, to proceed as it is, it is too subtle (that is, unreliable) to judge that I, an amateur, just hypothesized that it was "probably different".
Therefore, this time, after making my own conclusion, I asked the Porsche Center to confirm the existence of GPF of my car more firmly.
I asked my sales representative and the very great mechanic of the Porsche Center who is indebted to me, and as a result, officially
"My MY21 Porsche 992 Carrera Cabriolet does not have a GPF"
I received the answer.
It seems that the sales person in charge was on a day off from work on the day I contacted, but even so, he responded promptly and I was able to reconfirm that my sales person is really the best. I did ^^
Yeah, my Porsche sales person is the best in the world (my research (laughs)).
The sales people and the great mechanics are the ones I love very much. Thank you for checking while you are busy ^^!
Porsche 992 with GPF
Now, from here, I would like to confidently compare "My 992 without GPF" and "992 with GPF".
This is a picture of Porsche 911 (992.1) with GPF ↓
When zoom in, it looks like this ↓
How to check if the Porsche 911 has GPF or not
Now let's see how to find out if your Porsche 911 has a GPF or not.
I couldn't take a picture from the exact same angle with the one with GPF and the one without GPF, so this time I judged the positional relationship from the position of the part shaped like a small cylinder marked with a yellow circle. I hope you can.
First of all, here is the one with "GPF" ↓
And here is my 992 without GPF ↓
The part surrounded by pink in the above photo is the GPF, and the part surrounded by green in my 992 below is the catalytic converter.
I would like you to look at this yellow circled cylindrical part as an axis, but the first thing that makes a big difference in appearance is the shape of the pipe drawn with the red line.
For those with GPF, this pipe part is straight and very short ↓
However, in the 992 without GPF, this pipe part has a shape that is bent at about 90 degrees, and it is long ↓
You can also tell by the shape of this GPF or catalytic converter.
If this is GPF. Like the part surrounded by light blue, the shape far from the yellow circle cylinder is like this ↓
If it is a model without GPF, the shape far from the yellow circle cylinder is bowl-shaped, and the part connected to the pipe seems to be larger with more room ↓
In other words, as a way to determine whether the Porsche 992 has a GPF or not:
- The shape of the pipe coming out of the GPF or catalytic converter
- Difference in shape of GPF or catalytic converter
I came to the conclusion that I could make that judgment (* It is a conclusion I made arbitrarily, Porsche is not said).
At least my MY21 992 has no GPF, so I got a reply from the Porsche Center, so if it has the same shape as my 992, it is almost certain that it is a "GPF non-equipped car". I think ↓
As an amateur, I thought about it myself and came to a conclusion, "How to know if GPF is attached", but I would appreciate it if you could point out any mistakes. After that, if there is an easier way to identify it, please come ^^
In conclusion, it turns out that just because it is MY21, not all Porsche 911 (992) are cars with GPF.
I don't know from what month the production started with GPF-equipped cars, but at least my 992 was in the November 2020 production quota, so I think it's barely up to this point.
My Carrera is a base model, but maybe the turbo model came earlier.
By all means, if you are wondering if your Porsche 911 has a GPF, please take a look from below (it is easier to take a picture with a smartphone etc.).
I was very happy just to find out that my MY21 Porsche 911, 992.1 Carrera does not have a GPF.
In this way, I was really happy to be able to question what was ambiguous until now, and as a result, I was able to firmly understand that "GPF was not attached".
Thank you to everyone who gave us comments and questions, and to everyone at the Porsche Center who responded sincerely ^^! !!
