718 discontinued on US Porsche configurator

The current 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman,In the UK, the configurator had already displayed the message "No longer available for order" for some time.However, it seems that the 718 has now finally been discontinued on the American configurator.

If you access the American Porsche configurator and select the "718" model, you'll see the following screen:

When I looked at it, I saw the words "Unavailable for configuration." In other words, "Cannot be configured."

However, when I continued clicking on a model, instead of the configurator screen, I was shown a list of certified pre-owned cars currently available for purchase.

It seems that production of the current 718 has finally come to an end in the United States.

I also checked the German configurator, and it seems that the 718 still appears normally on the German site...

The lineup includes only two models: the 718 Cayman GT4 RS and the 718 Spyder RS.

These two have been on sale for quite some time now (for details,See here), it makes sense that only these two models are listed, but it's unclear whether there are still slots left.

Configuration is still possible as usual on the Japanese configurator (as of February 14, 2026).

What is officially known at this point is that the current model will be the last gasoline-engine 718, and next, only the top model will have a gasoline engine, with all the rest being EVs.

Of course, there are rumors that they may stop making the 718 an EV in the first place, so it's unclear what will happen, but it makes me feel a little sad that it will no longer be possible to configure the 718.

I think the 718 configuration may make a comeback in the US and elsewhere sooner than expected.

When I heard that the 718EV would also be sold alongside the 4L NA RS ICE model, I wondered whether it would be a platform compatible with both EV and ICE. It's true that BMW is compatible with both, but it's a compromise, and it's only possible because it's not a sports car. The 718 is sportier than the 911, so I think it would be tough to try to do both. If that's the case, perhaps a strategy like Mercedes's, where 80% of the parts used on the current platform are newly designed, could be an option. Another thing is that it's assumed to be a 4L NA, but will it be compatible with Euro 7 regulations starting November 26th? There are also rumors that the 911 GT3 will also be equipped with a HV and turbo.

It is generally considered unacceptable to close factories and lay off staff to make up for losses from new EV models, and the cancellation of the EV718 would be a must. It's often argued that manufacturers incur large losses in EVs when transitioning to next-generation technology, but the comparison of CO2 emissions between EVs and ICEs, including the production process, is unclear, and if battery regeneration is not possible due to cost, then EVs would be far more negative for the environment. The lifespan of the car itself would undoubtedly be shorter.

EVs are a major change on a macro level, but they don't take into account microscopic elements that can be thought about later.Furthermore, Euro 7's regulation of even microscopic brake dust and tire dust is nothing more than idealism that ignores reality, which is common in Europe.

I feel like Trump will raise tariffs on Euro 7.

    The cybersecurity devices and software are not specific to the 718, but should be compatible with Porsche and VW as a whole. Rather than being developed and manufactured by the manufacturer from scratch, the process involves procuring and adapting them from specialized suppliers, and this applies not only to cars but also to home appliances that can be connected to the internet.
    Another question is whether the 718ICE RS model will be built on the current platform or a new EV platform. The dealer says it's the latter. If it's the latter, cybersecurity won't be an issue and it will be possible to use an ICE engine other than a 4L. Porsche has also declared that the development period will be significantly shortened.
    
    The problem is, I think the reason the 911 doesn't offer all grades as mild hybrids is due to a lack of accumulated reliability data. The motor is integrated into the PDK, which feels more complicated than Mercedes or BMW. The 911's mild hybrid is performance-oriented with a large turbo, so perhaps it's best suited for city driving? But it's fun in the mid-to-high RPM range. Mercedes and BMW prioritize fuel economy and everyday usability, which is likely why the M2/3/4 are pure ICE. Going forward, I think the key to the 718 is a mild hybrid, considering cybersecurity and Euro 7 rather than ICE. EVs would likely be unacceptable to shareholders and other capitalists.

      You are certainly correct in pointing out that cybersecurity is built on a common architecture and supplier procurement basis across the VW Group, rather than being specific to the 718!
      
      I ended up thinking that everything would have to be developed and handled individually (what a narrow-minded view!).
      
      I think there will be some announcement about the future of the 718 sometime in 2026, so I'm looking forward to it.

        I feel the same way as RIKA, and I hope that Porsche can somehow hold on here.
        With regulations such as Euro 7, manufacturers have begun to focus on electrification and the entertainment value of cars, putting the joy of driving second. They are siphoning more data than necessary from users through the car and turning it into a black box with no coding allowed (a dig at BMW).
        
        The 718 is not just a single model, but a gateway to Porsche that began with the 924 50 years ago.
        As a man over 60, I cannot accept the idea of removing the ICE from the 718. I sincerely hope that young people will also be able to experience the ICE Porsche as a sports car, not an SUV or sedan.

        That's true, I'm still a beginner when it comes to Porsche, but it's still a shame that the ICE 718 will be gone (or even if it remains, it will probably only be a high-end model that is generally difficult to purchase and only in limited numbers).
        
        And even now, every time I ride or see a Porsche, I think, "Porsche is the best," so it makes me sad to see such a beloved Porsche being evaluated as "Porsche (or its way of doing things) these days is the worst."
