Mysterious 911 racing car spotted in spy shots
A rumor that started circulating a little while ago.
That's the rumor that "a Porsche 911 GT4 might make an appearance." Really?
With the end of production for the gasoline-powered 718 and its racing version, the GT4, Porsche may be developing another GT4, but it won't be an electric version of the 718; surprisingly, it might be a 911.

The rumor started when spy shots were taken of a car that appeared to be undergoing development testing. That car was a 911 with Manthey Racing decals and several parts that had never been seen before.

It looks like a racing car with a roll cage, motorsport-spec bonnet pins, and tow straps, but it's still a little different from any previous 911 racing car.

The potential of GT4 as seen from its differences from GT3 R
For example, the current racing model, the 911 GT3 R, has a very complex aero package both front and rear, with wide side skirts, a wing that is almost the same height as the roof, and a front exhaust vent that is almost the same size as the entire hood. However, the aero package of the car spotted this time is far simpler.
The hood is flat, the front splitter is simple, and the rear wing is less than half the height of the GT3 R's.

And now, is it likely that Porsche will create a race-spec GT3 model that is slower than the 911 GT3 R? That seems unlikely, so what is this then? Ah, this is the successor to the 718 GT4 Clubsport, and the first ever GT4 911.
An important clue that appeared about a year ago
There is one more thing that may support this, and that is that about a year ago, in May 2025, Porsche's racing teamContent posted by BGB Motorsports on Facebook..
That is the following sentence:

(Original text)``On the horizon though is a new Porsche GT4 offering for the 2027 season based on an entirely different model and it will start an exciting new chapter in Porsche motorsport history and we will be there once again''
(reason)"However, a completely new Porsche GT4 based on a different model is on the horizon for the 2027 season, which will bring a new and exciting chapter to the history of Porsche Motorsport. And we will once again be there to witness it."
Oh, wow. They're clearly stating that "a new Porsche GT4 based on a completely different model is in the works."
Wait, isn't this a huge leak? Is it really okay (lol)?
If the "completely different model" being mentioned here is the Taycan, Panamera, Cayenne, or Macan, that would be even more surprising than the appearance of a 911 GT4. But assuming that's probably not the case, then the only thing that comes to mind is the "911."

The 911 spotted this time appears to have been seen undergoing test runs around Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and the Nürburgring in Germany.
It appears that several Porsche team drivers were driving the vehicle and conducting development work.

The word "Challenge" appears on the wing.
Furthermore, according to sources in overseas media, the car's name may be something like "Challenge."

When I first heard about it, I thought, "Oh, surely it's just some unreliable source again? What's the deal with that?" (How rude of me, haha), but if you look closely, you can see that there are letters hidden by tape on the endplate of the car's wing, and if you look closely, it really does look like "Challenge"!

However, if you look closely, you'll notice that the car's front splitter has the "GT3" logo on it.

Hmm, so does that mean that the car being developed as a successor to the 718 GT4 is actually different from this new car, a new model called the "GT3 Challenge"?
Wait, the logo on the front hasn't changed, so is this really the "GT4 Challenge"?
Incidentally, although it's not apparent from the photos, according to someone who actually saw this car in action, the engine sound was more like that of a GT4 CS than a GT3.

The 3.8-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine in the GT4 race car makes a different sound than the 4.0-liter engine in the 718 GT4 road car and GT3, so, hmm, if that's the case, then this must be a GT4, right?
So, it seems highly likely that Porsche is planning to enter the 911 GT4 into GT4 races in the future, and that the model will be called the Porsche 911 GT4 Challenge.
However, if Porsche were to release the 911 GT4, it seems they would need to introduce a production model for racing homologation. In that case, Porsche would need a new production car that's more hardcore than the 911 GTS, though perhaps not quite a 911 GT3... which might make things a bit difficult.

But it's true that something is being tested, so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.
It was just a rumor!
