Will the Porsche Taycan and Panamera be combined into one model?

Posted: Posted:

The Taycan may take over the Panamera name in the next generation

It's still not a settled story.

The proposal is being considered as part of a broader cost-cutting plan put forward by Porsche's new CEO, Michael Leiters, in response to the huge costs of overhauling the company's electrification plans under former CEO Oliver Blume.

So, was the proposal really made?

It is said that Toyota is considering integrating the Taycan and Panamera into a model line that includes gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and full EV models, but it remains to be seen what will happen.

Although the internal combustion engine Panamera and the full EV Taycan are built on different platforms and have very different body styles, they are high-performance saloons that sit side by side in Porsche's lineup.

The Panamera is based on Porsche's MSB platform, which is shared with the Bentley Continental GT, and this architecture will be replaced by the newer PPC in the upcoming third-generation Panamera.

Meanwhile, the Taycan apparently uses the J1 platform shared with the Audi E-tron GT, and its successor was expected to move to the delayed SSP sports architecture.

It is also said that Porsche is reconsidering whether it makes sense in the long term to maintain separate development programs for the Taycan and Panamera.

According to a source (so who (lol)), even if the successor model continues to use a different platform, there is a possibility that parts will be shared.

In addition, the possibility of sharing parts between the two models and giving them a common model identity is also being considered.

In fact, the wheelbases of the Taycan and Panamera are very close, at 2,950mm and 2,900mm respectively.

According to a source (so who is that (lol)), even if the successor model uses a different platform, it won't be a major issue as long as it is designed with sufficient engineering flexibility from the start.

So, with the sale of an extended wheelbase version of the Panamera, it's thought that there is a possibility that two wheelbase options will be introduced for the Taycan's successor.

Even if the two models are merged, it is unclear whether the name Panamera or Taycan will be adopted.

From a financial perspective, merging the Panamera and Taycan model lines is not out of the question, with Porsche already taking a €1.8 billion impairment charge related to platform development delays and warning of a potential decline in profitability as it reassesses its original electric model strategy.

Combining the Panamera and Taycan into a single model line could allow Porsche to realize cost savings across multiple divisions while avoiding the need to discontinue either model for cost reasons.

Well, if we were to actually integrate the models, the Panamera and Taycan are certainly the most likely among the current models, but this is still just a rumor or a proposal (but it would be amazing if it actually came out as a proposal), so we don't know what will happen in the future.

There are a lot of different stories coming out.
