I found out why I could not slide the Porsche 911 in a steady circular turn

Posted: December 28, 2020 Updated:

Porsche 911 Carrera (991.2) that does not slip when the accelerator is off

To conclude the 2020 driving lessonSunako Juku held at Tsukuba Circuit Gym KanaI wrote the other day that I participated in.

At that time, there was "what I would like Seiji Ara to teach me," and it was my greatest mission on this day to teach me that.

I couldn't write about that last time, so I would like to write about what the mission was this time ^^

What I really wanted to know and told me on this day was, "How can I slide the Porsche 911 Carrera (991.2) in a steady circular turn?"

Even if you say "slide" here,

  • Run while drawing a circle, then slide the car by depressing the accelerator

Because, when I was allowed to do it before, I was able to do it.

After that, if I could keep hitting the counter and keep sliding all the time, it was impossible, but at least with this method, I was able to slide when I wanted to.

↑ Water droplet pattern when sliding before!

This time, I say "I can't slip" in the following way, which was said at Porsche's driving school (Porsche Truck Experience, hereafter PTE) "Please slip this way".

  • When you start running in a circle, the steering wheel is also fixed, then you can gradually increase the speed with just the accelerator work, and when the rear becomes full, turn off the accelerator and slide it.

I couldn't do this.

In the first PTE, I could not slide 911 with this accelerator off method.

I wasn't convinced, so I definitely want to be able to do it in the second PTE! I was thinking,Development that the car breaks immediately after the steady circular turn startsAfter all, I couldn't do anything before slipping (laughs).

↑ Waiting for a steady circular turn when participating in PTE for the first time

This "I can't slide the 911 with the accelerator off" has remained in me for a long time, but I didn't feel like I could do it on my own, so I wanted to do something about it. is.

There is a chance to come there and monopolize Seiji Ara at this Sunako Juku! !! !! (Oh, shouldn't I have it all to myself ^^)

Anyway, I went to Sunako Juku on that day and talked about this to Mr. Ara first, and it was "Let's do it."

I'm too happy! !!

Because, I couldn't slide it with the accelerator off, and I thought, "Is the tire (which I have now) too good?" Or "Is this individual too slippery and safe?" Because I was making "excuse I can't do" ... (← All are too positive without permission (laughs)).

However, even though I made such an excuse myself, "Then, when Mr. Ara manipulated this carrera, he said,'Oh, that's true. This car can't be slipped.' That's definitely not the case. I was convinced that (that's right ...).

At last, I might be able to experience the black carrera slipping off the accelerator, and maybe I could know what was wrong with me, and I was really excited from the first run. ..

"Then, let's do it," said Ara, who started advancing black carrera. Draw a circle slightly larger than the regular circle prepared at Sunako Juku.

Because, Mr. Ara said, "The circle at Sunako Juku this time is a little small, and even if you can put out such a circle, it is about 35 kg, and it is difficult to flow it."

The 911 is designed to run at high speeds (200-250km) and have just the right load transfer, so it won't flow at around 30km / h in a small circle.

Of course, in the case of PTE, it is the size of a circle calculated exquisitely for Porsche, it is possible to run at about 50 to 60 km / h, and it seems that load transfer will come out. I've heard about the diameter of the circle before, but it's a secret because it was a corporate secret ^^

The important thing is to wait

Well, and the conclusion.

Yeah, shouldn't it slip on my accelerator off? Mr. Black Carrera slipped brilliantly. With the accelerator off.

But it is.

I probably couldn't do this for the rest of my life without having Ara-san teach me this day.

Why is that?

I was really surprised. This is impossible. Because, "Wait a lot". "What?" ??

"Wait". The answer is "wait". wait. Yes, Just wait until it happens.

When you start drawing a circle, the speed has increased to some extent, and the rear has begun to flutter, the accelerator is turned off.

From there, just take your foot off the accelerator and, of course, don't brake, so-called "nothing".

From here, it's about "waiting for about 5-6 seconds". The handle is fixed.

It feels like 5 seconds, just waiting for the car to run with the lingering sound of the past, without doing anything with the accelerator off, which is extremely long.

However, if you wait for that 5 seconds, the next moment, as Porsche suddenly remembered, it suddenly slips like "Oh, I have to slip".

It was completely "What ?!" "After I turned off the accelerator, I just slammed (not that (laughs)), but if I waited, would I slip soon ?!"

But it really slipped.

I was completely convinced that if I was accelerating and the accelerator was off, it would slip at that moment. However, even if the accelerator was off, it wouldn't slip immediately, so I thought, "Oh, no, it won't slip," and stepped on the accelerator again. This was no good.

I tried to make a figure (photo).

I'll wait this long. * This is made by synthesizing the image when it is not actually slid, so the direction of the car etc. will not be helpful. For reference of the sense of distance until slipping ↓

He also told me why this is the case.

That's because my Porsche 911, which is 991.2 type, is a turbo-equipped car instead of NA, so unlike NA, it is designed not to close the throttle very quickly so as not to cause turbo lag at the moment when the accelerator is off. It is said that there is.

In other words, even if you release the accelerator with the pedal, the actual butterfly on the engine side will not close unless you wait for a while, so you had to "wait" for a few seconds time lag until the butterfly really closed. ..

Naruhodo. Very convinced.

Mr. Ara says, "That's why recent turbo cars won't run unless you keep waiting that long."

Of course, if the speed to release the accelerator is too slow, the speed of the car will be too slow to flow during this "waiting time".

Therefore, if you do not release the accelerator after giving a lot of understeer, it will be slower than the flowing speed, and as a result, it will be just a safe turn (laugh).

Anyway, it was said that if you increase the speed to a constant level, give a lot of understeer, then release the accelerator and wait for a while with the handle constant, the rear will flow.

I think that there are some people who could not slide the Porsche 911 with the accelerator off in a steady circular turn like me at PTE. I'm sure that this "waiting" was a problem because it was a turbo engine.

Mr. Ara also said, "It is difficult if you do not understand the mechanism that the butterfly on the engine side is not actually closed." (Mr. Ara always explained such a mechanism at PTE. It seems to be).

I was really excited in the 911 car. It's been about a year and a half? I was finally convinced.

I knew too much about why I couldn't slide, and I felt like the PTE when I first joined was finally completed here.

I was always worried. I wonder why I can't slide it.

Actually, I wanted you to see the dashcam video of "Porsche 911 with flowing rear" from "Waiting" that Mr. Ara ran, but unfortunately I can not upload it. Because I'm already excited and chatting all the time, so I'm too embarrassed ~ (laughs).

On this day, "Gently raise the accelerator, the front tires can not resist the centrifugal force, and it becomes rattling ... If you step on it as it is, you will go more outside, and if you return it, you will go inside. I was advised that it would be better to practice controlling the tires, "and on this day, the steady circular turning at my Sunako Juku became a practice without thinking" I have to slide! "As usual. ..

Future PTE

In addition, I was very interested in hearing about various stories about the future of PTE.

PTE is a Porsche driving lesson officially provided by Porsche, so if it becomes a program that will provide the content "If Porsche does this" without compromising, without approaching customers strangely. I thought it was good.

In that case, it may not even be possible for people at my level (+ a level of people who can do it a little more) to participate, but I think it's okay.

I wanted Porsche to provide driving lessons as Porsche for those who need it ^ ^

anyway! !!

During 2020, I was most happy about Porsche at the end of this year to be able to clear my question "Why can't I slide the Porsche 911 Carrera with the accelerator off?" maybe.

If you're Black Carrera, say, "If you turn off the accelerator, just wait a little longer" (I can't say that). I was worried for a year and a half ~.

Next time, when the day comes when I can participate in PTE, I will definitely think about this "waiting" and try it. I just feel like I can do it ^^! !!

In this way, even if the lesson content itself is a little different from what is prepared at Sunako Juku, it should not cause any inconvenience to those around you during Sunako Juku, even if you have any doubts about the movement of the car. For example, I was really happy to be able to explain and teach you properly.

* Even when I was taught this time in a steady circular turn, I was taught by keeping one person's time.

Sunako Juku on that day was also a little continuation of PTE for me.

Thank you again, Mr. Ara. And I am very grateful to Sunako Juku for giving me such an opportunity. Thank you ^^!

a. One last thing, a digression ...

On the way, I asked Mr. Ara to "drift all the time!" And he did that too.

What's amazing is, of course, it's amazing to be drifted, but the first thing that surprised me was when I started drifting my black carrera, it was only about 28-30 km / h. I suddenly started to slide from the state.

From my point of view, "Why did drifting start so suddenly at speeds of 30km / h or less ?!"

I also told you the reason. Another really great word. Obviously, Mr. Ara's understanding of cars is so tremendous that 911 is treated as expected, as if it were really natural and interesting. amazing.

↑ This is from the time of Sunako Juku in July 2020

What's more, even though you've been drifting all the way, you can turn the steering wheel as if you weren't slipping, and even if you're slipping, you can control even the destination.

It was really another world experience. "I'm slipping, can I go to the one I like?"

As expected, it was a moving day, saying that this is the "world" person. Thank you ~.
