New Porsche 911 GT3 world premiere
On Friday, October 18, 2024 (October 19, Japan time), the 992.2 Porsche 911 GT3 and GT3 Touring Package had their world premiere.
As expected, 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the GT3, which was launched in 1999, so I think Porsche wanted to announce the new GT3 by the end of 2024 at all costs.
Therefore, if they were to release the touring package later, they wouldn't have enough time, so is it like, "Oh well, let's just release it all at once and do everything we can to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the GT3 by the end of the year!"?
Am I thinking too much (lol)?
Now, leaving that aside, I would like to take a quick look at what was announced this time as well.
- The anniversary GT3 will be powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine with enhanced weight reduction, 375 kW (510 PS) and 450 Nm of torque, and new options.
- For the first time, the Weissach package is available for the GT3
- A wider range of standard equipment and options are now available than ever before.
Modern style Porsche 911 GT3
- Sharper front and rear design and improved aerodynamics
- (For both GT3 and GT3 Touring Package) The front diffuser has a new contour, with an improved spoiler lip shape and underbody fins.
- This increases downforce and optimises airflow.
- Redesigned matrix LED headlights combine all the light functions of the 911 and eliminate the need for additional lights in the front apron (enlarged air intake area for a clearly structured look).
- The headlights can also be fitted with optional white accent rings.
- At the rear, the diffuser, air intake and rear lid have been redesigned.
- Rear wing with new angled side plates
- The double wishbone front axle uses specially developed teardrop-shaped trailing arms for excellent aerodynamics.
- This increases downforce on the wheel arches at high speeds and improves brake cooling.
- Suspension engineers have reduced pitching (anti-dive) to maintain a balanced downforce between the front and rear axles, even when braking from high speed.
- To achieve this, the front ball joint of the lower trailing arm is set low on the front axle.
- These changes are taken from the current 911 GT3 RS.
- Standard equipment includes 255/35 ZR 20 (front) and 315/30 ZR 21 (rear) sports tyres with improved wet grip.
- Optional road-approved track tyres are also available.
Further customisation of the Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring Package
- The Touring Package eliminates the fixed wing, preserving the timeless and elegant lines of the 911.
- The name "Touring Package" dates back to the 1973 911 Carrera RS2.7 equipment variation.
- The Touring Package (hereinafter referred to as TP) will be available for the GT3 from 2017.
- The rear lid grille has the "911 GT3 touring" logo
- An extendable rear spoiler with diaphragm edge, the famous Gurney flap and an adapted fin design on the underbody ensure aerodynamic balance
- The interior is fitted with high-quality leather, providing a classic and sporty feel.
- For the first time, the 911 GT3 TP is now available with a rear seat as an option
- This makes it a sports car that can be used on an everyday basis, and can be further individually adjusted to suit the owner's wishes to enjoy the ultimate driving pleasure.
- "Especially on twisty, winding roads, you can clearly feel that the steering is even better calibrated than the previous model," said Porsche brand ambassador Walter Röhrl.
- In addition, "the car responds more gently from the center position and does not lose any direct feeling, which further increases the feeling of trust in the car." "The shorter gear ratio also significantly increases the driving pleasure on country roads."
Overall lightweight design
- Thanks to its low overall weight, the 911 GT3 has agile and direct handling.
- The new 911 GT3 is designed to be extremely lightweight
- New silver-coloured lightweight aluminium wheels reduce unsprung weight by over 1.5kg compared to the previous model
- With the optional Weissach or "Leichtbau" (Lightweight) packages, magnesium wheels are available that are 9 kg lighter.
- The new 40Ah lithium-ion lightweight battery achieves a further weight reduction of approximately 4kg, helping to improve athletes' BMI.
- In its lightest configuration, the new 911 GT3 weighs just 1,420 kg
Gear ratio is 8% shorter
- The new 911 GT3's 4.0-litre naturally aspirated engine is designed to comply with current stringent exhaust gas regulations and is equipped with two particulate filters and four catalytic converters.
- With this extremely powerful emissions control system, Porsche is also creating a captivating soundscape
- The power output of the flat-six engine was achieved through a series of optimization measures
- Revised cylinder head and sharper camshafts from the 911 GT3 RS provide even more dynamic performance at higher engine speeds.
- Flow-optimized throttle valves and an optimized oil cooler are also used.
- The horizontally opposed engine continues to produce 375kW (510PS)
- This means that the improved, high-revving, naturally aspirated engine needs to move just 3.8 kg per kW (2.8 kg/PS) in the lightest vehicle configuration.
- The final reduction ratio of the 7-speed PDK and 6-speed GT manual transmissions is 8% shorter than the previous model.
- Both transmissions are available for both the 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 TP.
- The PDK model accelerates to 100km/h in 3.4 seconds and has a top speed of 311km/h.
- The manual gearbox version accelerates to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 313km/h.
- "The new 911 GT3 offers improved stability and handling when going over bumps and curbs thanks to optimised damper tuning, which gives the car even better control on the race track," said Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister. "The anti-dive system significantly reduces pitching during braking, resulting in a much more stable vehicle balance in all conditions."
Innovative lightweight sports bucket seat
- The new 911 GT3 is available as an option with new lightweight sports bucket seats with folding backrests and seat shells made from CFRP.
- The seats have built-in thorax airbags, electronic height adjustment, manual fore-aft adjustment, and three-stage seat heating options.
- Part of the headrest pad is removable
- This improves ergonomics for most drivers who wear helmets on the track.
- The backrest can be folded down via loops, allowing access to the optional rear seat system, available for the first time on the 911 GT3 TP.
- Alternatively, the adaptive sports seats plus (with 18-way electric adjustment) can be selected instead of the sports bucket seats.
- The ignition system is a rotary type.
- Optional rollover bar highlights motorsport orientation
- The central digital instrument cluster supports the driver with a clearly structured display and control concept
- Contrasting color scheme allows for instant readability of rev counter and stopwatch
- In "Track Screen" mode, the digital displays to the left and right of the rev counter are reduced to key tire, oil, water and fuel data, while a shift flash indicates optimal shift times for the driver.
- If desired, the rev counter display can be rotated to show the 9,000 rpm cut-off speed at the 12 o'clock position.
Individual packages for the 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 Touring
- Various equipment packages are available for the new 911 GT3
- For the first time, the Weissach package allows the 911 GT3 to be configured even more individually for use on the race track.
- The rear axle anti-roll bar, coupling rods and shear panels are made from CFRP, as are:
- roof
- Rear wing side plate
- Exterior mirror top shell
- Mirror Triangle
- Air blades in the front area
- Additionally, leather and Race-Tex trim visually enhance the interior.
- For the first time, the top of the dashboard of the 911 GT3 is covered with anti-reflective Race-Tex.
- CFRP door handles and storage nets optimize interior door panels for weight reduction
- CFRP roll cage and lightweight magnesium forged wheels are also available as options.
- The 911 GT3 Touring Package is available with a lightweight package
- Roof painted the same color as the exterior
- The stabilizer, coupling rod, and rear axle shear panel are made of CFRP.
- Magnesium lightweight forged wheels and lightweight door panels are also part of the package.
- It is paired with a standard six-speed GT sports gearbox and uses the shortened gear lever from the 911 S/T.
- A plate inscribed "Leichtbau" in front of the gear lever indicates the package.
- The 911 GT3 with rear wing is available with a Clubsport package for track use at no extra cost, which includes:
- Steel roll cage bolted to rear
- 6-point seat belt for the driver
- Handheld fire extinguisher
- The package requires optional lightweight sports bucket seats.
- "The new 911 GT3 is even more exhilarating and individual," says Andreas Preuninger, head of the GT car division. "We have paid special attention to every detail and implemented many of the features our customers want, allowing us to adapt the GT3 even more specifically to the driver's goals and preferences."
