Porsche: Porsche ◆Porsche 911 (992.2 type)

Porsche 911 (992.2 type) world premiere: 911 Carrera and GTS unveiled

Posted on: May 28, 2024 Updated:

The hybrid version of the Porsche 911 (992.2) is called the T-Hybrid.

It is said to be an early model of the Porsche 911 992.The 992.1 Porsche 911 was announced on November 28, 2018.was.

It's been six and a half years since then. The late 992 model, also known as the 992.2 model, which Porsche fans around the world have been waiting for, was finally announced on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

I've been waiting for this day. I'm so happy!

In these six and a half years, my thoughts have changed in many ways. At first, I knew very little about Porsche, and then when rumors came out that the 911 would become an electric car or a hybrid, I denied it at first, saying, "Eh, that's not good!"

...Then, after a few years had passed and I had started to think about it, I began to think, "I'm also interested in a hybrid 911" (simple).

So, I would like to take a look at the contents of the world premiere of the Porsche 911 (992.2) announced in Stuttgart by Mr. Frank Moser, Vice President of the 911/718 Model Line of Porsche AG, and the moderator Claire Jedrek.

"T-Hybrid" with significantly improved performance

What is the new Porsche 911 (late 992 model)?

  • 911 Carrera GTS→ Lightweight T-Hybrid equipped with a newly developed 3.6-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, electric turbocharger, and electric motor
  • The GTS has a striking design with active aerodynamics
  • Fully digitalized cockpit and expanded connectivity
  • 911 Carrera→ Equipped with an improved 3.0-liter horizontally opposed 6-cylinder engine
  • Iconic 911 to close 2024 product launches
  • New 911 Carrera GTS is the first road-legal Porsche 911 with an ultra-lightweight performance hybrid
  • Newly developed, innovative powertrain system with 3.6 litre displacement delivers significantly improved driving performance
  • The 911 Carrera GTS Coupe can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds and has a top speed of 312 km/h.
  • The 911 Carrera is equipped with a lightly modified 3.0-liter twin-turbo boxer engine, making it more powerful than its predecessor.
  • New 911 features refreshed design, improved aerodynamics, a fresh interior, upgraded standard equipment and expanded connectivity

Inspired by motorsport: a groundbreaking performance hybrid

  • Porsche engineers used knowledge gained from motor racing as the basis for designing the hybrid system for the new 911 Carrera GTS models
  • In order to find a hybrid system that was perfectly suited to the 911, various ideas and approaches were developed and tested.
  • The result is a unique drivetrain that fits perfectly into the overall concept of the 911 and significantly improves performance.
  • The lightweight and powerful "T Hybrid System" is equipped with a newly developed electric exhaust gas turbocharger.
  • An electric motor, mounted between the compressor and turbine wheel, instantly increases the turbocharger speed, thereby generating instant boost pressure.
  • The electric motor in the exhaust gas turbocharger also functions as a generator, producing up to 11 kW (15 PS) of power.
  • This energy is extracted from the exhaust gas stream.
  • The wastegate-less electric turbocharger allows the use of just one turbocharger instead of the previous two, ensuring a more dynamic and responsive power delivery.

  • The powertrain also includes a permanent magnet synchronous motor integrated into a new, more powerful eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK).
  • Supports the flat-engine with an additional drive torque of up to 150 Nm even at idle, providing a power boost of up to 40 kW
  • Porsche connects both electric motors to a lightweight, compact high-voltage battery.
  • Its size and weight are equivalent to a conventional 12-volt starter battery, but it can store up to 1.9kW (gross) of energy and operate at a voltage of 400V.
  • Lightweight Li-Ion battery for the 12V on-board electrical system to optimise overall weight
Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Drivetrain
  • The heart of the T-Hybrid Drive is a newly developed 3.6-liter horizontally opposed engine
  • The high-voltage system allows the air conditioning compressor to be driven electrically, eliminating the need for a belt drive, making the engine much more compact.
  • This frees up space above the power unit for a pulse inverter and DC-DC converter.
  • The bore has been enlarged to 97 mm and the stroke to 81 mm, increasing the displacement by 0.6 liters compared to the previous model.
  • The engine is equipped with VarioCam camshaft control and rocker arm valve control.
  • Maintains an ideal fuel/air mixture (lambda = 1) across the entire map
Porsche 911 Carrera GTS 3.6-litre six-cylinder boxer engine
  • Even without electric assistance, the horizontally opposed engine produces 357 kW (485 PS) and 570 Nm of torque.
  • The system's total power output is now 398kW (541PS), up 45kW (61PS) from the previous model, and the total torque is 610Nm.
  • The new 911 Carrera GTS also outperforms its predecessor in 0-100km acceleration (3.0 seconds)
  • This efficient performance hybrid delivers highly dynamic driving characteristics while at the same time reducing CO2 emissions by significantly reducing excess weight compared to plug-in hybrids.
  • Weight increased by just 50kg from the previous model to 1,595kg
  • The new 911 Carrera is equipped with a 3.0-liter flat-head engine with twin turbos, which was also completely revamped in the 992.2 model.
  • In particular, the intercooler adopted from the turbo model is located directly under the rear lid grille on top of the engine.
  • The 911 Carrera's turbocharger was previously only available on the GTS model.
  • These improvements have simultaneously reduced exhaust emissions and increased power output to 290kW (394PS) with a maximum torque of 450Nm.
  • The new 911 Carrera Coupe's 0-100km/h time is 4.1 seconds (3.9 seconds for the Sport Chrono Package model), 0.1 seconds faster than the previous model, and its top speed is 294km/h, 1km faster than the previous model.

Optimized suspension and active aerodynamics

  • The suspension of the new 911 Carrera GTS has also been comprehensively revised.
  • Rear-axle steering is standard for the first time, improving stability at high speeds and reducing turning radius
  • The Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) anti-roll stabilisation system is integrated into the performance hybrid's high-voltage system
  • This allows the use of an electro-hydraulic control system, making the system more flexible and precise.
  • The sports suspension with variable damping system (PASM) and a 10 mm lower ride height provide typical GTS handling.
  • The new 911 is available in seven different wheel designs, either 19/20 inch or 20/21 inch.
  • The wheels, available for the first time on the 911 Carrera, feature an exclusive design with carbon blades that reduce drag and increase efficiency.
  • The new 911 Carrera GTS comes standard with 21-inch wheels with a width of 11.5 inches and 315/30 ZR 21 tires at the rear, while at the front, 245/35 ZR 20 tires are fitted to 20-inch wheels with a width of 8.5 inches.
  • Significantly increased performance and larger rear tire contact patch improve the driving dynamics and traction of the 911 Carrera GTS

Sporty, streamlined exterior

  • The exterior design of the new 911 is streamlined through carefully targeted updates
  • Most of the measures are aimed at improving aerodynamics and performance.
  • The changes include a new model-specific bumper.
  • For the first time, Porsche has integrated all light functions into matrix LED headlights with the distinctive four-light graphic now standard on the 911.
  • This made it possible to eliminate front driving lights, freeing up space for larger cooling vents at the front of the vehicle.
  • The front end of the new 911 Carrera GTS models features five vertically arranged active cooling air flaps visible from the outside as well as hidden flaps on both sides.
  • For the first time in a 911, these flaps are complemented by an adaptive front diffuser in the underbody, which controls them together with the cooling air flaps.
  • These elements control the air flow as needed.
  • When minimal power is needed, the flaps are closed to optimise aerodynamics, but when power is required (such as on a track), the flaps direct large volumes of air towards the car's radiator.
  • The assistance system's sensors are located behind the glossy surface beneath the number plate.
  • There are also new headlights with optional HD Matrix LED functionality with over 32,000 light points.
  • High-performance high beams illuminate the road for over 600m
  • Additional innovative features include dynamic cornering lights, lane brightening, construction and bottleneck lighting and pixel-precise anti-glare high beam depending on the driving mode.
  • The redesigned light strip design with its integrated arc and "PORSCHE" logo makes the rear end of the 911 appear deeper and wider.
  • A redesigned rear grille with five fins on each side forms a graphic unit that connects to the rear window and blends into the retractable spoiler below.
  • The license plate is positioned higher and the rear bumper has a neat structure.
  • Model-specific exhaust system elegantly integrated into striking diffuser fins
  • A sports exhaust system is also available as an option for the 911 Carrera models.
  • The 911 Carrera GTS model comes standard with a GTS-specific sports exhaust system
  • Optional aero kit further enhances the performance of the 911 Coupé
  • The aero kit includes a distinctive Sport Design front bumper with a unique front spoiler, matching side sill panels and a lightweight fixed rear wing.
