Porsche to move 718 Cayman/Boxster production from Osnabrück to Zuffenhausen

Last month I wrote about how Volkswagen was considering closing factories in Germany.

At the time, the news was that Porsche was considering either the Dresden or Osnabruck factories, but this time, although it is not news of an actual closure, it has been reported that Porsche has decided not to enter into a production contract with the Osnabruck factory after 2026.

Osnabruck was previously the location for the production of the 718 Boxster and Cayman, but production of these cars is now planned to be moved to the main factory in Zuffenhausen.

It seems that the demand for EVs is slower than expected, and production at the Zuffenhausen plant is considered sufficient. But can they even produce the EV718 in Osnabruck? If they can't, it seems they can't continue in any case.

The Osnabruck plant is a historic facility that once produced the VW Karmann Ghia, but despite having an annual production capacity of 100,000 units, it only produced 28,000 units last year, so the loss of production of the Porsche 718 in the future is a matter of life and death for the plant.

The 718 Boxster/Cayman will be relocated from Osnabruck by Easter (April) 2026.
