Porsche Center Takanawa 1st Anniversary Event: Yasutaka Gomi Talk Show

Posted: April 29, 2023 Updated:

Congratulations on the 1st anniversary of Porsche Center Takanawa

Celebrated its first anniversary on April 1, 2023Mr. Porsche Center Takanawa, congratulations.

Since I was allowed to visit the preview one year agoIt seems like a lie that it's already been a year. Time flies so fast that I feel like I can't live in a daze.

This time, I participated in this Porsche Center Takanawa (PC Takanawa) 1st anniversary event, but would you like to participate in the event together? It was a very fun day for me because I was able to enjoy it with everyone I talked to.

First of all, when I was heading to PC Takanawa, I asked, "What's that car in front of you?"

Scenery like this in the city is not a normal scene (laughs).

I can only say that the sound that the Carrera GT makes even when accelerating for a moment is wonderful, and I was smirking from behind the Carrera GT, saying, "Ah, this is the wonderful sound I've heard for the first time in a long time!"

Exhibition of successive Porsche 911

On this day, PC Takanawa has an exhibition of successive Porsche 911s, which is also a very valuable lineup.

What was on display was (sorry if there is something different in age):

  • 1960 Porsche 356
  • 1978 Carrera T
  • 1989 930 Turbo
  • 1993 964 Turbo 3.6
  • 1995 993RS
  • 1993 Porsche 959

kana.

It was very gorgeous with other double cherry blossoms decorated ^ ^

Yasutaka Gomi talk show

Along with the exhibition of successive 911s of this first anniversary event, the main event was a talk show by motor journalist Yasutaka Gomi.

I'm very sorry, but I've never seen Mr. Gomi's You Tube etc. It was the day I heard Mr. Gomi's story for the first time.

However, the fact that this experience of "heard Mr. Gomi's story for the first time" was not a video, but a talk show with him in front of me was a very valuable experience, and it was a very, very enjoyable time. I was able to spend it.

The talk show on this day was the content that Mr. Johannes Sasaki, a Porsche professional, was proceeding and Mr. Gomi talked about Porsche, but this was very easy to understand, and it was a lot of fun with the content that naturally echoed in me. is.

While it is clear that Mr. Gomi possesses a tremendous amount of knowledge and depth, this time it is a talk show for the general public, so it is very easy for everyone to understand, but it is a talk that conveys the amount of heat. It was really interesting, and I was impressed by the talk that was easy to understand.

The great thing about Porsche is that it does not have a normal brand

It was very easy to understand, and it was very sympathetic, so I would like to share the contents of this talk show here as much as possible.

First of all, Mr. Gomi said, "What kind of brand is Porsche (compared to other brands)?"

Mr. Gomi says that the great thing about Porsche is that it does not have a normal brand.

In other words, other manufacturers have normal models, and Mercedes has performance brands such as AMG, Audi RS, and BMW M, but Porsche has normal models in the first place. There is no.

Since all Porsche models are "sports cars" from the beginning, it was generally said that the strength was that there was no need to develop a sales strategy as a normal model.

The reason why this is an advantage is that if you develop only as a sports car model from the beginning, you don't need to think about fuel consumption so much (as an example), but you can develop a commercial car as a normal model. If you have it, you have to worry about fuel consumption etc.

To give a concrete example, Mercedes' C63 is based on the C-class, and in that case, first of all, there are restrictions such as having to develop as a C-class model with fuel consumption in mind. We will develop a high-end model based on the developed model... In other words, we will develop a performance model while compromising something for the normal model.

A more easy-to-understand analogy was given about the "parallel steering" used by Porsche.

Normally, when a car turns, the left and right front tires do not turn at the same angle, but the turning angles are different.

Because the inner side can be cut a lot in the direction of turning, so if the left and right tires are set in that way, it will turn smoothly, which means that it will lead to good fuel economy ... But Porsche does that. Left and right tires turn at the same angle without worrying.

That's parallel steering. This is the reason why tires squeak in winter.

By adopting this, when the car tries to turn, the left and right tires will fight with each other because they want to go in different directions, and the fuel consumption will be worse. Since it will move in one direction, the steering wheel will not loosen and the handling will be improved.

Porsche has improved the handling by applying such parallel steering to all models, but other manufacturers have even adopted this parallel steering from the beginning for reasons such as having to consider fuel efficiency. I have to.

It was said that Porsche's strength is that it can develop a car specialized as a sports car from the beginning, which can only be done because Porsche has been established as a sports car brand from the beginning.

Haha, I see.

I apologize for my poor explanation, but Mr. Gomi's story was very easy to understand, and it made me think, "Ah, I see!"

What is Porsche swamp

Another very interesting thing was Mr. Gomi's consideration of "What is Porsche Swamp?"

It is often expressed as "Porsche swamp" that is fascinated and addicted to Porsche, but Mr. Gomi wants to make something like this Porsche swamp as a journalist, looking for an answer It seems that it was done.

And he talked about the theory that he arrived at at this time, "This might be the answer."

It seems that the theory of "What is Porsche swamp" was "Because it is Porsche that has everything".

In other words, Porsche is located at the center of everything, the disadvantage is that the price is a little high.

If you think about what people are particular about when choosing a car, for example, BMW is for comfort, Mercedes is for comfort, Audi is for safety and stability, and each manufacturer has its own personality. By the way, Porsche is that "brand that has everything".

In addition, there are of course manufacturers that are positioned as supercars above Porsche, but for that, if you want to enjoy the sensual engine sound, Ferrari, Lamborghini if you want more stimulation, and great handling. Where there is a division called McLaren, Porsche still has all of those things, and because it is a versatile person located at the center of supercar brands and German premium brands, people know Porsche once. When I go to another brand, I feel like "something is missing", and I think I will eventually return to Porsche, which has everything.

It was concluded (at the moment) that it was a so-called Porsche swamp.

It was very clear and convincing.

About the planned evolution of Porsche

In addition, just as the Porsche 993 was the last air-cooled memorial model, there was also talk that the current 992 type may become another pure ICE model as a memorial model.

First of all, the history of Porsche until it became the current Porsche is involved, but Mr. Gomi says:

  • In the first place, the Porsche 911 did not grip without the power to press down from above because the tires were bad in the past
  • Therefore, we considered how to hold down the drive wheels from above, and applied load by placing the engine at the rear end of the car as much as possible.
  • In the RR model, the heat source is located in the back where the wind does not hit the most, so it was a fight against the heat anyway.
  • As the competition became more and more high-power, it became a water-cooled model in order to cool down because the high power generated more heat (this is the 996 type).
  • Although it was possible to produce power by becoming water-cooled, next time we would like to use that power as a driving force, so we developed a transmission, and completed the PDK for the 997 model
  • Because the PDK of the 997 type was smaller than the normal manual transmission, it was not long enough, so it was worn out
  • By removing the geta when it became the 991 type, I was able to bring the tires further back and made it a long wheelbase (By doing so, braking, acceleration, and riding comfort improved)
  • In that case, what was left at the time of development of the 992 type was lateral movement. Wide tread to accommodate it
  • Until now, only four-wheel drive was a wide body, but now all models are wide body → making both narrow and wide will only hinder manufacturers
  • By using only a wide body, the engine can be mounted lower and more optimally than ever before → By placing it directly on the chassis and tightening the engine mount, the rigidity of the rear is greatly increased.
  • If you leave it as it is, the ride will be uncomfortable, but since Porsche has an active engine mount, you can adjust the ride comfort by adjusting how to loosen the engine mount.
  • In this way, the 992 type was able to do well in the horizontal direction

In other words, "Phase 1" for the Porsche 911 is up to the air-cooled model 993.

And "Phase 2" is completed with 992 type.

It was said that the next stage would be "Phase 3," where electricity would come in some form.

Therefore, Mr. Gomi said that the 992 model, which is the final model of ICE, is the best and most complete model, and it is very easy to understand and I also thought so.

Mr. Gomi thinks about Taikan

Finally, a story about Mr. Gomi, who owned Tesla for about 3 years, about Porsche's full electric car Taikan.

Mr. Gomi also seems to have thought "It's an electric model" at first, but when he actually posted it, his sense of values changed.

According to Mr. Gomi, Porsche is a request from a customer riding a 911 "I wish I could pack more luggage" "I wish an adult could ride properly in the back seat" "But the exercise performance is the same as 911 I wonder if there was a dream that I wanted to fulfill.

And it was said that it was the Taycan that responded to that (because there was a Panamera, but it was a bit heavy, so it could not be said that the performance was the same as the 911).

In other words, the Taycan is exactly the sedan version of the Porsche 911, which Porsche wanted to do, and although it could not be achieved with an ICE car, it could be achieved by using the power of electricity. That was it.

The maximum torque exceeds 1000Nm, so it accelerates tremendously.

If it's an ICE car, NA would be a 10-liter engine, and even a turbo car would need about 5 liters. It was said that it was amazing that it was loaded in a very compact state because it was an electric car.

After that, the car is above the center where the tire rotates, and when the car turns, centrifugal force acts to force it to go outside (outer roll), but in the case of the Taycan, it is heavy with 500 Since the battery is mounted at the bottom of the body (below the center of the axle of the tire), it is said that it is really amazing that it does not roll outward when turning.

It seems that it will make a so-called inner roll (movement like a motorcycle) when turning, but because the rider is not used to it and the feeling is scary, the Taycan "dare" to adjust the weight of the suspension etc. It is said that it is adjusted to the extent that it rolls.

Huh.

However, because of this, the Taikan does not wobble even if the suspension is not stiffened, and it runs with the feeling that it is attached to the road surface ... but it seems that the ride is getting better.

No, it was easy to understand.

Mr. Gomi said that "the current era where both ICE vehicles and electric vehicles can be selected" is a very good and happy era.

Certainly, at the moment you can still choose and purchase both by yourself, so it's a great time ^ ^

It was a very, very enjoyable talk that I could only empathize with, and while having a deep knowledge, I was able to explain it in a way that anyone could understand.

Gomi-san, thank you very much for your easy-to-understand explanations! It was a wonderful presentation that also conveyed the heat to Porsche ^ ^

After the talk show, PC Takanawa kindly lent us the lounge on the 2nd floor, so we were able to have a cup of tea with everyone and talk about various things.

There was a large table in the lounge, and everyone was sitting there and having coffee, so I said, "This looks like a work meeting." Were you there?” I replied, “Yes!

Even from a third party's point of view, it seemed like it was a work meeting.

On this day, everyone who went to PC Takanawa together with me, and the sales person in charge of PC Takanawa who accepted a large number of people, from the time of my black Carrera who made various arrangements in advance. Thank you to the sales staff of , everyone at PC Takanawa, and Mr. Yasutaka Gomi for a very enjoyable time.

I pray for the further development of PC Takanawa in the future.
