Porsche unveils new Formula E car, the 99X Electric

New Formula E car meets GEN3 Evo standards

On October 24, 2024, Porsche announced the new Porsche 99X Electric as its Formula E car for the next two seasons.

This fully electric open-wheel racing car complies with the regulations of the third-generation Formula E car, called GEN3 Evo, and has been fully improved through in-house development by Porsche.

The main innovations are:

  • Adding front-wheel drive
  • High grip tires
  • Improved front wing

World champion Pascal Wehrlein and last season's most victorious driver António Félix da Costa will continue as drivers for the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E team.

Additionally, the two Andretti Formula E customer cars will be driven by former world champion Jake Dennis and new Porsche works driver Nico Müller.

Porsche's in-house development

This evolution model is said to inherit the most successful formula sports car in Porsche's history, with the GEN3 version of the Porsche 99X Electric winning the Drivers' Championship for two consecutive years.

Dennis will win the championship in the 2022/2023 season, and Wehrlein will win the championship in the 2023/2024 season.

While the concept remained the same, regulations limited the amount of energy available, so teams and drivers had to optimise the efficiency of their cars in every area.

Manufacturer-developed components were permitted to be modified for the GEN3 Evo, and Porsche development in Weissach made the most of the optimization potential identified over the past two seasons, making improvements particularly in terms of drive dynamics.

Manufacturer component certification will again be valid for two seasons, with the next-generation 'GEN4' model due to be introduced in Season 13 (2026/2027).

New Features – GEN3 Evo

Let's take a look at the main innovations mentioned above:

Adding front-wheel drive

In the future, front-wheel drive may be used during qualifying, race starts and attack mode, which temporarily switches the car to front-wheel drive, allowing the Porsche 99X Electric to accelerate to 100 km/h in around two seconds.

Using front-wheel drive as efficiently as possible is another engineering challenge, but the lessons learned are also being applied to Porsche road cars.

High grip tires

Exclusive supplier Hankook high performance tires.

To reduce the footprint, each car will only be able to use two sets of tyres per race weekend (three sets in the case of double-headers).

The tire profile makes the tire suitable for both dry and wet conditions.

Improved front wing

It is said that the new evolution model can be easily identified by its improved front wing.

The new shape is said to improve safety and make the car better able to withstand collisions, and further improvements have been made to the cladding behind the roll bar and in front of the rear wheels.

New coloring that adorns the cutting edge

The new body colours are:

  • Purple Sky Metallic
  • Shade Green Metallic

These colors were also used on the Taycan Turbo GT that Porsche announced in early 2024.

The purple and green hues replace the traditional black, white and red combination, and are said to symbolize the transfer of technology from motorsport to road cars. The colour change also represents electrification and Porsche's pioneering spirit.

In other words, it is said to be a visual expression of Porsche's innovative strengths in progressive Formula E.

The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team and Andretti Formula E will next take part in Formula E's official pre-season test, which will be held in Valencia, Spain from November 4-7, 2024.

In addition to Wehrlein and da Costa, the drivers will also be two female drivers from the Czech Republic and Spain, Gabriela Jílková and Marta García.
