Porsche unveils new 911 GT4 R: Debuting in 2027, the first 911-based racing car in the GT4 category.

Just a little while agoThe model that was rumored to be "possibly a Porsche 911 GT4?"That's what I think it comes down to.

This vehicle is designed for global GT4 racing, but this is the first time it has been developed based on the 911 platform.

Let's take a closer look at the newly announced 911 GT4 R. First, let's start with information regarding its participation in GT4 category races:

GT4: A Global Growth Area in Customer Motorsport

• Porsche Motorsport is expanding its model lineup in the GT4 program, particularly in the high-performance segment.
• The International GT4 category is one of the fastest-growing segments in customer motorsports worldwide.
• At the same time, international series such as the ADAC GT4 German Series and the GT4 European Series are considered important elements in talent development on the path to top-level GT3 racing.

• Porsche's decision to introduce the 911 platform to the GT4 category clearly demonstrates the growing importance of this class in international motorsport.
• Since launching the GT4-only model in 2016, Porsche has developed and manufactured more than 1,500 racing cars based on the Cayman.

911 Cup racing engine and gearbox

• The high-revving 4.0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine is based on the unit used in the 911 GT3, and in the racing version, it produces a maximum of 382 kW (520 PS) and a maximum torque of 470 Nm.
• As per GT4 regulations, these performance figures vary depending on the Balance of Performance (BoP) classification.
• For example, the 911 GT4 R comes factory-installed with an airflow restrictor (53.7 mm), which reduces its output to 316 kW (430 PS).
  • →The engine itself is designed for 520PS, but under GT4 regulations, when a 53.7mm restrictor is installed, it becomes 430PS to comply with Balance of Performance (BoP).
• Power is transmitted via a sequential 6-speed dog gearbox with steering wheel paddle shifters and a 4-disc racing clutch.

• Due to regulations, the chassis employs a different approach than the 911 Cup.
• The wheels are each 1 inch narrower and have 5 holes, just like the production model 911.
• Dual adjustable dampers and three spring rate selection options allow for even more precise settings.

The exterior and cockpit use natural fiber composite materials.

• It adopts the main body structure of the 911 Cup and effectively utilizes its aerodynamic optimization.
• The rear wing is manually adjustable in 11 positions.
• A distinctive feature is the extensive use of natural fiber-reinforced plastics combined with epoxy resin.
  • This material is used in a variety of parts, including doors, engine covers, aerodynamic components, and parts of the cockpit.

• Drivers can receive all the necessary information through a 10.3-inch color display.
• The integrated data logger and high-precision GPS system support analysis and performance optimization during races.
• Additional ballast components allow the vehicle to conform to the weight category specified by Balance of Performance (BoP).

• The 911 embodies Porsche's motorsport DNA more than any other car.
• Transplanting this to GT4 cars opens up new possibilities in terms of performance and driving experience.
• The new 911 GT4 R benefits from the detailed work already done during the development of the 911 Cup.

Of course, they're in different categories so they won't race together in official races, but I wonder what kind of differences there would be if a 911 Cup and a 911 GT4 R raced side-by-side?
