Miami's Porsche Design Tower appears to be sinking at an unexpected rate

Miami luxury building subsidence problem

In 2014, the "Porsche Design Tower』.

This is a luxury condominium tower designed by Porsche Design, designed for car enthusiasts, with each unit having its own elevator and a system called Dezervator that allows residents to transport their beloved cars directly to the garage on their residential floor.

It's a lovely luxury property, but new research suggests that this stretch of luxury condominiums in North Miami is sinking at an unexpected rate, and that the Porsche Design Tower is part of that sinking area.

Nearby are residences (including some opening soon) designed by car manufacturers such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, and even Pagani.

The University of Miami study found that 35 buildings in the area (Sunny Isles Beach and the surrounding coastline) could sink by up to three inches (7.62 cm) between 2016 and 2023.

The area where the subsidence was confirmed includes not only the Porsche Design Tower, but also the Ritz-Carlton Residences and two Trump Towers.

Incidentally, just a few kilometers from this location, in Surfside, Florida, part of a 12-story residential tower collapsed in 2021. → Since this was an old building, deterioration was also noted and subsidence alone was not believed to be the cause, but since then, the structural safety of high-rise housing along the coast has been re-evaluated.

"Most of the buildings along the waterfront have subsided significantly," said Falk Amelung, a geophysicist at the University of Miami and lead author of the new study.

The researchers looked at satellite imagery, which can measure subsidence (or sinking land) to within a fraction of an inch, and found that in this case, subsidence ranged from 0.8 to just over 3 inches.

That said, it is said that at this point in time, the subsidence is not necessarily something to worry about, and there have been no reports of structural problems in any of the buildings, so it's good for the time being, but I think hearing things like this would be a bit scary for the people living there.

However, generally speaking, most relatively new buildings that were built 10 years ago or so will naturally sink a little due to their own weight after many years of construction, so as long as this sinking is taken into account during the design stage, it's not a problem.

That said, researchers are still continuing to monitor the situation closely.
