Porsche AG announced that it had acquired V4Drive GmbH from the VARTA AG Group on March 4, 2025.

Porsche will become the company's new largest shareholder, while VARTA AG will continue to hold a small stake but will not be involved in management.

Porsche and VARTA will cooperate on the development and production of high-performance cylindrical batteries, and as a result, V4Drive will be rebranded as "V4Smart."

The new name is intended to emphasize that high-performance batteries can be used in a variety of fields, not just the automotive sector, and it is expected that this ultra-high performance lithium-ion cylindrical battery will help develop a new customer base in the future.

As many of you may know, V4Smart battery cells are already being used as "booster cells" in the 992.2 Porsche 911 GTS model.

The battery cells are currently being produced at the Ellwangen plant, and mass production is planned with the cooperation of Porsche Werkzeugbau GmbH. Production is also due to start at a new plant in Nördlinge from April onwards.

The new roles will be carried out by three people, and by the end of 2025 the company plans to hire a number of employees from the VARTA AG group, increasing the number of employees to around 375 at both its production sites in Ellwangen and Nördlinge.

Development of the production line at the Nördlinge plant is already underway, led by Porsche Werkzeugbau GmbH with the support of other plant engineering companies.

Thanks to the strategic partnership between V4Smart and Porsche Werkzeugbau GmbH, the company can now offer its customers the entire process chain for cylindrical battery cells, from cell chemistry and cell design to finished battery cells and the entire process chain.

The company plans to primarily use the newly developed system for future production and to move forward with operations that utilize renewable energy.

Separate from this announcement, Porsche AG also intends to proceed with the acquisition of shares in VARTA AG, thereby supporting the restructuring of the VARTA AG group based in Baden-Württemberg (this transaction has not yet been completed).

With this acquisition, Porsche will be able to secure high-performance battery technology and stabilize its supply chain. It may lead to an expansion in production of T-hybrid vehicles and further technological development in the future.
