On April 16, 2024, a massive amount of rain fell in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, causing massive flooding.
The amount of rainfall that fell on this day is equivalent to the total rainfall that Dubai receives in a year, which is an astounding situation.
Dubai doesn't get much rain to begin with, and the city was not designed to handle such heavy rains, so the roads were flooded and many cars were stuck in the water.
Meanwhile, a video of Porsche's fully electric Taycan driving through flooded roads was shared on social media.
According to people who were actually at the scene, the driver of the Taycan noticed the highway was flooded and slowed down, but after thinking for a moment, he continued straight ahead at a low speed.
For a moment, it was said that the Taycan seemed to have lifted off the road, but what was the truth?
If you watch the video, you can see that it is moving through some very deep water, which is simply amazing.
In the case of cars with internal combustion engines, water can get in through the air intake and cause the car to stall, as well as having devastating effects on the inside of the engine.
However, because EVs don't need air to run, the battery pack and drive unit are typically completely sealed, so the vehicle should be able to provide power even if it's almost completely submerged, as long as water doesn't come into contact with the electrical connections.
That said, we don't know what happened to this Taycan after the drive ended, so we can't say whether the car was completely safe and without any problems.
In addition to this Taycan, some people have said in response to the video on SNS, "I encountered the same situation twice in the Taycan, but it never floated even once," or "My husband and I did the same thing in the Taycan near Boston and had no problems," so I wonder if there are any particularly big problems with the car.
Incidentally, the Tesla Model 3, another fully electric vehicle, was also spotted driving through flooded roads during the recent Dubai floods.

In the video, the Tesla doesn't appear to have been significantly affected, and the owner of the car was safe and has since uploaded a video from inside the car:

But, if I were in that situation, I don't think I would have the courage to jump into the water!
