Taycan gets major update, new version improves in almost every area
The new Taycan, which we had been waiting for since it was said that it would be announced within a few days, was finally announced on February 7, 2024~^^
Porsche says that it has undergone a large-scale update, and the performance has improved over the current model in almost all areas.
What's so great about the new Taycan?
- Higher → Charging performance increases by 50kW to 320kW. Energy regeneration increases to 400kW when driving at high speeds
- Faster → 0-100km/h acceleration time reduced by 0.6 seconds, Taycan Turbo S's 0-100km/h time is just 2.4 seconds
- Farther → Cruising range is up to 678km (WLTP), which has been increased by 35%. All versions of Taycan can now be charged from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes.
Now, let's take a quick look at the details of what was announced:
- Style Porsche has also sharpened its design and differentiated its turbo models even more strongly.
- All versions of the Taycan also feature the latest generation of the Porsche driver experience, with even more as standard and an improved display and control concept.
- Three body variations:
- Taycan sports sedan
- Taycan Cross Turismo (versatile model with off-road package available)
- Taycan Sports Turismo (sporty yet practical model)
- All three variants come with four powertrain options: rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.
- The new Taycan is scheduled to arrive at each Porsche center in the spring of 2024 (*I don't know if it will be available in Japan)
- Approximately 150,000 Taycans have been sold worldwide, and currently the most important markets for Taycan are the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and China.
- Development engineers and test drivers drove more than 3.6 million kilometers around the world to improve the new Taycan.
Even higher performance
- All improved models offer significantly faster acceleration than their predecessors, including:
- The Taycan sports sedan can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds (0.6 seconds faster than its predecessor)
- Taycan Turbo S does 0-100km/h in 2.4 seconds (0.4 seconds faster than its predecessor)
- With the Sport Chrono Package's new push-to-pass feature, up to 70kW of boost is available for 10 seconds, depending on the model, at the touch of a button (*with Performance Battery Plus). (Cannot be used with 2WD models of Taycan, Taycan Sport Turismo, and Taycan 4 Cross Turismo)
- Acceleration improvements are primarily due to increased system output:
- The base Taycan has a 60kW improvement over the previous model.
- Launch control adds an additional 140kW to the Taycan Turbo S compared to before.
- This increases the system output of the top model to 700kW/952PS
Cruising range improved by more than 35% compared to the previous model
- Depending on body type and engine, WLTP range increases by 175km (35%) to up to 678km
- Not only has the number of charging times been reduced during long distance driving, but the charging speed has also been improved.
- The 800 volt DC charging station can charge up to 320kW (50kW more than before), which means it can maintain a charging capacity of over 300kW for up to 5 minutes, allowing for very high charging capacity even at low temperatures much faster. means
- Performance Battery Plus total capacity increases from 93kWh to 105kWh
- Depending on individual driving style, etc., the time required to charge from 10% to 80% can be cut in half compared to the previous model.
- The first generation Taycan takes 37 minutes to charge from 10 to 80% at a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, while the improved Taycan takes 18 minutes under the same conditions.
new active chassis
- Adaptive air suspension is standard on all new Taycans
- New Porsche Active Ride suspension can be equipped as an option on the 4WD version
- The suspension keeps the Taycan's body level even during dynamic braking, steering, and acceleration maneuvers.
- Smooth ride and almost completely absorbs bumps
- Porsche Active Ride Suspension distributes the load on the wheels in a well-balanced manner for perfect connection to the road.
- When the appropriate mode is activated, the suspension compensates for pitch and roll, reducing G-forces on the occupants.
Extensive efficiency measures
- The simultaneous increase in performance and efficiency is due to many factors:
- Advanced powertrain with new rear axle motor delivering up to 80kW more power than its predecessor on all models
- Improved pulse inverter with optimized software
- more powerful battery
- Improved thermal management
- Next generation heat pump
- Improved regeneration and 4WD strategy
- The maximum regeneration performance during deceleration from high speed has improved from 290kW to 400kW, more than 30%.
- Aerodynamically optimized wheels and tires with reduced rolling resistance are standard on all versions
- New 21-inch wheels and tires specially developed for the new Taycan
Significantly improved equipment and weight reduction
- While the weight of the new model has been reduced by up to 15 kg, the standard equipment is even more extensive than before (*Weight is when compared with Taycan Turbo)
- For example, the following are standard equipment:
- Ambient light
- Front seat heater
- Porsche Intelligent Range Manager (PIRM)
- wireless rechargeable smartphone tray
- Driver side and passenger side electrical charging ports
- drive mode switch
- Power Steering Plus
- (In Japan) Taycan 4S also comes standard with Performance Battery Plus.
- Base model has adaptive air suspension and aluminum door entry guards
- A lighter battery with increased capacity
More attractive design
- New front and rear end styling with new headlights and taillights further refines the Taycan's sleek, pure design.
- A new front fender and flat headlight further emphasize the Taycan's wide feel.
- New headlights with high-resolution HD matrix technology using sophisticated optics illuminate at night with Porsche-specific four-light graphics
- The Porsche logo on the rear light strip has a three-dimensional glass-look design, and the illuminated version, which is equipped for the first time, features animations when getting in/starting off.
- Taycan Turbo and Turbo S areAccent color turbo nightThis makes it stand out from other models in both the exterior and interior.
Updated control and display concept
- The instrument cluster, center display and optional passenger side display feature additional functionality and an optimized user interface.
- Steering wheel mode switch is standard equipment
- Taycan models equipped with the Sport Chrono Package and Performance Battery Plus also have a dedicated push-to-pass button on the mode switch.
- A new control lever located behind the left side of the steering wheel allows for more intuitive operation of driver assistance systems.
- Apple CarPlay now more fully integrated into vehicle displays and features
- New in-car video feature also allows video streaming on center display and passenger side display
