Porsche GT division chief: "It's very important to keep the manual transmission"

Posted: Posted:

Manual transmissions aren't going away from Porsche's GT cars anytime soon.

Currently (in the United States), there are only 29 models available to purchase new with a manual transmission.

Of the 29 models, only the Porsche 718 and 911 are included.

However, as of now, it is said that the next generation of the 718 will become an EV, leaving only the 911.

In this situation, Andreas Preuninger, head of the Porsche GT car division, said at the launch of the 911 GT3 in Spain:American automotive media Motor1"For the time being, at least one manual version of the 911 will be available," the article quoted him as saying.

He added: "From a personal point of view, having a manual transmission has always been very important to me. I prefer a manual transmission as a driver's car. I don't mind shifting gears when I'm driving on the circuit, although I know that a PDK is faster."

At present, the only 992.2 Porsche 911 models that can be ordered with a manual transmission are the Carrera T and GT3.

For the latest GT3 (among American customers), customers with the winged GT3 and 46% are choosing MT, while customers with the GT3 Touring Package and 75% are choosing MT.

According to Andreas, he had already started thinking about reviving the manual transmission around the time of the 991 generation, and he realized this with the 911 R. The 911 R was more or less the development project for the gearbox that is still in use today.

Furthermore, he

"MTs are lighter, which contributes to improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, and the internal resistance of a manual gearbox is significantly lower than that of a PDK, meaning more power is transmitted to the steering wheel."

"There's no need for a power pack to generate hydraulic pressure for the clutch system, and there are no two clutches going through a wet sump to create resistance."

"In the real world, manual transmissions consume less gasoline than PDK cars, which means less emissions. That's a fact."

He continues,

Therefore, it is expected that manual transmissions will continue to be used in the GT3.

However, to make the engine viable under modern emissions regulations, the company would have had to add four catalytic converters to the exhaust, as well as new cams, a different throttle body, and a few other small changes to maintain the 502 horsepower, which was quite a challenge.

Finally, Andreas said, "(In the MT version) this combined with the high-revving 9,000 rpm ICE engine makes it incredibly fun. With this car, both I and we are in the entertainment business. This is not just a means of transportation, we have to make it to put smiles on people's faces."

I don't know why MT is no longer available on the Carrera S, but it seems that MT will remain an option for at least GT cars (= GT3) as much as possible for a while to come.
