New Michelin tires developed for the Porsche Carrera GT

A while ago, PorscheThe suspension issues with the Carrera GT will finally be fixedIt was also reported that when the repairs were made (still in the US), all Carrera GTs would be fitted with new tires free of charge.

Porsche sent notices about this repair to American Carrera GT owners, which revealed for the first time that Porsche was developing new tires for the Carrera GT. The new tires that owners would be able to install free of charge would be these newly developed tires.

That tire is the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2.

Now, Porsche has made an official announcement.

The Carrera GT is a car of which 1,270 units were produced between 2003 and 2006, but for a model that is so old and produced in such small numbers, it's surprising that now in 2024, new tires for the Carrera GT are being developed in collaboration with Michelin.

The newly developed tyres use the latest in tyre technology to optimise the rubber compound and structure of high-performance tyres, improving performance in both wet and dry road conditions.

Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister has already tried the tires and said: "The Carrera GT is a true dream car, so I'm delighted that the new tires have taken this legendary car's performance to a whole new level."

Porsche is truly impressive, as they even prepare new tires developed with the latest technology for the "legend" ^^

This is the second tire update for the Carrera GT.

The Carrera GT is equipped with a naturally aspirated V10 engine originally developed for the Le Mans 24 Hours race, with a displacement of 5.7 liters, 450 kW (612 PS), maximum torque of 590 Nm, and a weight of just 1,380 kg.

Its top speed is 330 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is 3.9 seconds.

From the start, the Porsche Carrera GT was fitted with custom-made Michelin tires (Pilot Sport PS2), and in 2013 the Pilot Super Sport tires were developed.

This is the third new tire, the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2. Of course, this tire has the Porsche N mark.

The goal of developing this tire was to further improve driving dynamics and safety on both dry and wet roads.

To achieve this, the tread uses two different rubber compounds (bi-compound technology).

The inner shoulder and inner tread blocks are made with silicate to obtain the best compound for wet grip, while the outer shoulder and outer tread blocks have a compound designed for dry grip, with carbon black being one of the most important ingredients.

The contact patch has also been further optimised through extensive driving dynamics and handling testing, some of which was carried out on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Apparently the engineers have significantly improved the feedback at the limit, making it much clearer to feel the point at which the tyres start to lose grip.

Carrera GT is faster and safer

The newly developed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres are said to ensure faster stopping in emergency braking situations.

The braking distance from 100 km/h to a stop has been reduced by 2.5 meters, and from 200 km/h the braking distance has been reduced by 12 meters.

Not only is performance improved, but safety is also improved.

The new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres for the Carrera GT can be ordered from Porsche Classic Partners or Porsche Centres.

...But before that, it would be great if Carrera GT owners who were subject to the recall in Japan (i.e. all Carrera GT owners) could upgrade to these newly developed Michelin tires free of charge in addition to the recall response.
