Coolant is leaking... no, it's spurting out
Last month, in April 2025, I went out in my beloved black Carrera, a 991.2-type 911-based Carrera.
The destination was a few kilometers away in the same part of Tokyo as my home, and after parking my car there for a few hours and running some errands, I was driving home in my black Carrera when the incident occurred.
I parked my black Carrera in a parking lot, turned off the engine, got out of the car and walked to the front.
Suddenly, I looked at the ground and saw some liquid.

Huh? Hold on a minute.
This is too much water to be coming from an air conditioner, and when you look closely it's not clear but pinkish??
Wow.
I have a really bad feeling about this.
Oh no, this isn't from Black Carrera, is it? Surely not?
Hopefully not!!
Hoping that this was the case, I moved the parked black Carrera forward a little again to check just to be sure.
Ah.
Ahhhhh (sorry for the dirty photo).
Something is leaking from the perfectly black Carrera.

The parking lot was a little dirty so everything mixed together and it turned out a dirty color, but this is definitely a pink liquid.
In fact, the black Carrera had previously had a coolant leak, and I saw a beautiful pink liquid at that time, so I realized, "Oh, it's coolant this time too."
Incidentally, the last time the coolant leaked, I think it was the water pump (apparently this is quite common on the 991.2).
And at that time, I, a pervert, still have the coolant that leaked out of the black Carrera. Hmm? You probably don't know what I'm talking about (lol)? You can find out more about it here:My precious minicars
Now, the difference between this and the last time I had a coolant leak was that it was only a small amount leaking, and I only noticed it when a few drops dripped out while the car was parked and formed a puddle about 20cm in diameter.
But this time, it just seemed to come out in a big way.
So I quickly checked how much coolant was in the 911, and was shocked. It said "about 20 liters" and I was like, "Wow, there's that much in there?" (I'm ignorant)!!!
That would be a big problem. If all 20 liters were to spill out, it would be a big problem.
Although we decided to call a tow truck, we first cleaned up the leaked liquid so as not to cause a nuisance to those around us.

After I finished wiping it down simply, I wondered, "Huh? It doesn't seem like anything additional is leaking out."
If it's coming out that wet, new puddles will probably form while you're wiping it.

I have a habit of checking the water temperature every now and then while I'm driving, so although I don't remember the exact number when I got home that day, I don't remember thinking when I saw it, "Isn't the temperature too high?", and of course no warning or anything like that appeared.
I contacted the sales person I always rely on and nonchalantly asked, "The temperature doesn't seem to be a problem (for now), and there are no warnings, so why don't I just drive it quickly and take it to the Porsche Center?" He replied, "If it overheats and the engine is damaged, you won't be able to drive it." And although it certainly seems fine now, there's no telling what will happen within the next few kilometers, so I decided to have it towed after all...

To the Porsche Center Aoyama event
To digress a little, for that reason, after having the black Carrera towed to Porsche Center Takanawa Koishikawa, I hurried off to an event being held at Porsche Center Aoyama.

I was meeting up with some fellow Porsche enthusiasts at the event that day, and we were talking about visiting the exhibitors there as well.
Just as we were supposed to head to this event, we discovered a coolant leak and ran out of time, so we ended up arriving at the venue about 20 minutes before the event ended.

Still, I managed to get there before the end and I was glad to meet everyone and see the Macan EV and the Taycan.

There seemed to be a variety of mini events within the event and various stalls, but I arrived 20 minutes before the end and was chatting with everyone so I didn't have time to look around...what a shame.
However, the only thing I was told was "They sell beer," so I managed to get some.

Cheers to the EV Macan.

Why coolant leaked from the Porsche 911 Carrera
Sorry, I got sidetracked, but time passed and my black Carrera was finally repaired and returned to me. I'm so happy!
What on earth was the cause of the coolant leak this time? Was it the water pump again, like last time?
I was surprised when I got a call from the Porsche Center after my black Carrera was towed for the first time, and they told me, "There was no coolant leaking."
Ah, yes. I see.
Wait, what, um, what? It's leaking big time?!
...I was confused, but it seems the correct word is "erupted" rather than "leaked."
Active cooling air flap motor failure
The cause of the coolant leak was apparently a failure of the motor that powers the active cooling air flap at the front of the Carrera.
Hehe, did you notice?
Now I wonder why I suddenly decided to research this flap and write a blog about it just the other day! Click here for the article:Active cooling air flaps for the Porsche 911 (991.2)
In fact, the motor that drives this active cooling flap (hereinafter referred to as the flap) on the Black Carrera broke on the front right side, which meant that the right side remained closed even when the flap should have been open. This probably caused a slight rise in heat (but not to the point where a warning would have been issued), and as a countermeasure, coolant was "intentionally" sprayed out of the sub-tank.
What this means is that water-cooled Porsches have a mechanism (as a safety device) that "when the engine water temperature rises, the coolant expands, causing the pressure in the tank to rise and exceed a certain pressure, the excess coolant is discharged from the sub-tank hose." Wow.
This is what happened with the black Carrera. So even though the coolant was gushing out, it didn't leak out after that.
Now, this is where photos come in handy.
Honestly, I'm starting to think that maybe I'm being too weird, but almost every time I stop my car I take a picture of the 911. I just love it so much.
I immediately took a look at the photo I took in the parking lot where I was parked just before the coolant leaked (just before I was about to head home).

Oh oh.
I understand? ?
It's a shame that the left front side isn't visible in this photo (the left is open), but can you see that the flap on the right front is closed even though the bus is stopped?
I see. The motor is broken so the flap isn't really opening or closing. Maybe the motor broke by chance when it was closing?
Wow, even though I had taken a photo, I didn't notice it at first glance.

Although it was an unexpected cause, they replaced the motor and the flap problem was solved. Thank goodness.
However, after replacing the motor, they performed a final inspection and found an error in a different location.Although it is not clear whether this is related to the coolant leak, they replaced the other parts that had errors and the problem was resolved.
After the motor was repaired once, a new error occurred and it had to be repaired again, so it took a little longer to come in for repairs, so when I drove it on the day I went to pick up the black Carrera, I thought, "Ah, the black Carrera is the best after all," and I was really smiling to myself, occasionally tapping the steering wheel, and bursting with joy, saying, "Welcome back!!"

Black Carrera makes me nervous in many ways, but whenever something happens, I'm grateful because "if something is going to happen, now is probably the best time for it to happen."
This time too, if the coolant had sprayed out while I was out, it would have been a big problem, so they let me know at the perfect time when I got home.
This may not happen often, but if you have a water-cooled 911 with a flap, I recommend that you check that the flap is not closed from time to time when you park your car! It's not guaranteed that the flap will erupt immediately after closing (it depends on the situation/driving style at the time), so it's good to notice it early.
Anyway, I'm glad that he recovered and came back.
Thank you for your help this time.Porsche Center Takanawa KoishikawaThank you very much ^^
