The newly announced Porsche 911 GT3 R

Posted: Posted:

The new 911 GT3 R will be unveiled on the same day as the new 911 Cup

August 8, 2025The new 992.2 type "911 Cup" has been announcedAt the same time, the 911 GT3 R was also announced.

This new model is scheduled to be released for the 2026 season, and is said to have been optimized down to the smallest detail, including improved aerodynamics.

Since its debut in early 2023, the current Porsche 911 GT3 R has competed in over 500 races around the world, achieving numerous brilliant results.

Last season alone, customer teams won the unofficial GT3 World Championship for manufacturers in the Intercontinental GT Challenge and won all three GTD Pro classes in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Other:

  • The current GT3 R, of which Porsche Motorsport has delivered 106 units to customer teams to date, has won six of the eight races at the legendary Nordschleife in the Nürburgring Long Race Series (NLS).
  • Winning the inaugural Endurance Trophy, awarded to LMGT3 teams and drivers in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC)
  • Wins class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, beating eight rival sports car manufacturers
  • Unbeaten again in the French classics this season
  • In the DTM (German Touring Car Championship), 2023 champion Thomas Preining recently won at the Norisring, reigniting his challenge for the 2025 title.

etc.

The latest improvements have focused on optimising the suspension and aerodynamic performance, with the aim of achieving more balanced handling and improved drivability, especially for amateur drivers, under changing road conditions.

Chassis and aerodynamic optimization

An exterior feature of the new 911 GT3R is the ventilator duct added to the top of the front wheel arch.

These ducts, known as "louvers," are said to make a significant contribution to improving aerodynamics.

Combined with the optimised kinematics of the double wishbone front suspension, which provides an anti-dive effect by increasing resistance to forces, the louvres reduce front end compression during deceleration, maintaining aerodynamic balance.

This reduces the vehicle's tendency to pitch forward under braking (pitch sensitivity), resulting in more precise and predictable braking behavior and improved overall control.

The rear is fitted with a swan-neck rear wing and a 4mm thick Gurney flap, which generates additional downforce and allows for a wider range of aerodynamic adjustment.

The underbody is fully sealed and reinforced at the rear, while improved kinematics of the multi-link rear axle improve anti-squat, reduce rear-end compression under hard acceleration and improve dynamic load distribution between the axles.

These improvements, combined with Bosch's improved 5th generation racing ABS, are said to result in more balanced handling.

Furthermore, minor improvements have been made based on the extensive feedback received from Porsche Motorsport customer teams at various race events around the world:

  • Fluid cooling has been added to the electro-hydraulic power steering system to optimise thermal performance, ensuring consistent steering force even on demanding circuits such as the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
  • New ceramic wheel bearings are more robust and durable, while improved centering pins simplify driveshaft installation.
  • The driveshafts are now cooled directly, independently of brake cooling, by a dedicated air supply via NACA ducts in the side skirts, improving stability on high-speed circuits such as Monza and Le Castellet, where a low ride height is crucial.
  • At the same time, the rear brake cooling system can be more precisely adjusted, which is important on tracks such as Daytona.
  • Improved driver air vents ensure consistent air circulation in the cockpit even during long races
  • The RLU USB stick has an added practical advantage: the remote logger unit saves driving data from the new 911 GT3 R directly onto a USB stick, which can be easily swapped even during short pit stops - eliminating the need for a laptop cable.

Such.

A wide range of option packages are standard equipment

In addition, the new 911 GT3R will offer optional packages that were not previously standard equipment, including:

  • Sensor Package
  • Endurance Package
  • Pit Lane Link Package
  • Camera Package

These kits include

  • 4 laser vehicle height sensors
  • 2 master brake cylinder potentiometers
  • 1 road surface temperature sensor
  • rearview camera
  • Water bottle system mount

It is said that this includes:

The refuelling detection sensor also detects when the fuel nozzle is inserted and, in conjunction with an additional refuelling LED, plays a key role in ensuring compliance with minimum refuelling times and energy amounts in series such as IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship, as well as the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.

Customer teams can choose from a wide range of special equipment options tailored to the requirements of the GT3 Series, including:

  • Dedicated drive shafts for the FIA LMGT3 class and IMSA
  • The NLS features an improved pre-silencer similar to the LMGT3, and wing supports with a modified adjustment range.

It seems that this includes the following:

First test run under competitive conditions was a success

The 4.2-liter flat-six engine produces a maximum of 416kW (565PS) depending on the BoP (Balance of Performance) classification, and there are virtually no changes to the drivetrain of the current 911 GT3 R.

Porsche Motorsport plans to offer approximately 60 update kits for existing vehicles based on the 992 911, starting at 41,500 euros (excluding consumption tax in each country). This means that existing GT3 R owners can purchase these update kits and benefit from the improvements without having to purchase a new vehicle.

Development of the new 911 GT3 R is said to have begun in August 2024, with testing taking place at Porsche's facilities in Weissach as well as at permanent circuits such as Sebring, Paul Ricard, Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

In mid-April, a test vehicle entered by Herbert Motorsport took part in the Michelin 12 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps held at the Belgian Grand Prix Circuit, where important testing took place under harsh conditions.

Former Porsche junior driver and IMSA GTD Pro champion Laurin Heinrich, along with German drivers Ralf Bohn and Alfred Renauer, came in second overall in the two-part race, making the test drive of the new GT3R a great success.

It has a very strong and cool appearance, and we can expect great things from the new 911 GT3 R in the future.
