There was an announcement on March 8, 2023 that magnesium crankcases are now available for new Porsche 911s.
It is provided by Porsche Classic and can be ordered as a genuine part from the Porsche Center. Compatible models for this case are:
- F-series
- G series (2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.7 liter engine vehicles)
In other words, the target models include the Porsche 911 Carrera RS2.7, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.
In the first place, "What is a crankcase? I should start with ^^, the crankcase is the case where the crankshaft is stored, and until now, when this crankcase was damaged, if it was a small crack, it would be welded. Or they had no choice but to reuse used parts from other old engines.
However, with the provision of crankcases for this new classic 911 from this time, it will be possible to create new engines for most classic 911 models.
Customer demand for such original engine components is so high that Porsche Classic is already working on crankcases for other generations of the 911.
In order to make this crankcase this time, he first obtained the data set necessary to reproduce the Porsche 962 Group C racing engine, which is an aluminum crankcase.
Afterwards, Porsche Classic experts looked up parts lists and technical information in the Porsche archives, and interviewed former and current staff members about the design details.
It seems that old engine drawings and production-related data could not be completely deciphered, so it is a bit surprising that even Porsche does not always keep all such past materials neatly.
It was surprising because there was an image that everything seems to be properly stored.
It is said that the magnesium crankcase newly made this time was also made with the benefit of the data set from such an aluminum crankcase.
All crankcases have a design version and purchase part number.
The newly made crankcase is cast by the supplier using the sand casting method based on CAD data. Next, it seems that it will be machined with a 5-axis CNC machine, and in this process more than 50 types of cutting tools, drilling tools, and milling tools will be used.
For series production, Porsche's specialty is strict quality control, so each case is measured using a 3D measuring probe, and a 3D original coordinate measuring machine is used to compare it with the processed data. It is said that more than 1,300 dimensions are managed for this measurement. Way to go.
Of course, the prototype engine made with this crankcase also undergoes several weeks of large-scale testing, and it can only be commercialized after passing all inspections without any problems.
More than 80,000 genuine parts for Porsche classic cars can be ordered worldwide
Currently, there are more than 80,000 genuine parts and accessories that can be provided for Classic Porsche all over the world.
Furthermore, it seems that parts that are out of stock are also being remade, and since 2013, about 200 spare parts have been remade every year.
In addition to parts, more than 1,000 manuals, repair guides, and technical materials such as "Type, Size, Weight (TyMaTo)" brochures are available from Porsche Classic.
Recently, Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM) has also been issued, and you can see how Porsche is focusing on classic Porsches.
