Air-cooled Porsche event "Luftgekühlt" held at Universal Studios in Los Angeles

Posted on: October 11, 2024 Updated:

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Luftgekühlt

The Luftgekühlt event is themed around classic Porsches with air-cooled engines, and is said to be extremely popular, especially among air-cooled Porsche enthusiasts.

The Luftgekühlt was started in 2014 by racing driver Patrick Long and creative director Howie Idelson.

So what exactly does the name of this event, "Luftgekühlt", mean?

I decided to look into it properly and searched for it, and found an article I had written in the past. That means I had learned it a long time ago but didn't remember it. No good (lol).

Luftgekühlt means "air-cooled" in German. Please refer to this if you are interested:What does "air cooling" mean in German?

Now, this Luftgekühlt event was held on a grand scale at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, USA, as it marks the 10th anniversary of the event and the 50th anniversary of the 911 Turbo.

Because the event was held at Universal Studios, they were able to plan a Porsche exhibit using various film-themed sets such as the Wild West, New York, and European cobblestone streets. And that's certainly true! Only Universal could do that.

I found a website that introduced the Porsches that were exhibited at this event, so I would like to take a look at a few of them (photo source information is at the bottom of the site).

1962 Porsche 356 Karmann Notchback

Apparently there are less than 60 of this car in existence.

1959 356A Sunroof Coupe

The body color is aquamarine metallic.

1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS

It's powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and has a top speed of 257km/h, despite only 180hp, thanks to its lightweight fiberglass body.

1967 Porsche 911 S

Equipped with Sport Kit II, Rally Equipment and Limited Slip Differential.

This car is said to have won the under 2 liter class at the Kent 300 Trans Am, and this time it was exhibited mounted on a Chevrolet ramp truck painted in Vasek Polak Racing colors.

1971 Porsche 917K

Apparently this car was on special display indoors with studio lighting.

1972 Porsche 916

This is a very rare prototype, one of only 10 made, and was made for Ferdinand Piech's sister.

It is powered by a 2.7-liter six-cylinder engine with a combined horsepower of 210. However, it is about 80 kg lighter than the Porsche 911S of the same period.

1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR “R7”

A coupe from the Martini Racing Works Team equipped with a 3.0-liter engine. It finished 4th overall in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

It had 330 horsepower and was equipped with the distinctive "Mary Stuart" tail, named after the Queen of Scots because its shape resembled the high collar she wore.

1976 Porsche 934

Apparently only 31 934s were produced, with a top speed of almost 305 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 96 km/h in 3.9 seconds.

1981 Porsche 911 Rally

1981 Porsche 911 SC

As one of the later versions of the 911SC, this model is equipped with a 3.0 liter engine with 204 horsepower. There are flowers on the roof...

1985 Porsche 962C

One of 91 race cars produced. Victor Computer livery. A car that has won many accolades.

1992 Porsche Carrera RS

The body color is maritime blue.

These lightweight models feature an upgraded 260 horsepower engine and lowered suspension.

1997 Porsche 911 993 RWB

This is the first Porsche 911 produced by Kei Nakai of Rauh-Welt Begriff (RWB) since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gunther Werks Speedster

The 4.0-liter engine by Gunther Werk, mated to a Getrag G50 transmission, produces over 430 horsepower. It weighs just 1,175 kg. Only 25 were made.

1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR Display

Meyers Manx Carrera GT

Apparently, this model is equipped with the same base and drivetrain as the Porsche 550 Spyder and 356, the logo is made of 14-karat gold, and the paint is apparently the exact same as that used on the 550 Spyder of this era.

Porsche 930 Turbo Reimagined by Singer

This reimaged model by Singer Vehicle Design comes in Viola Metallic and has a total output of 550 horsepower and a 6-speed manual transmission.

It seems like it was a pretty big air-cooled Porsche event.
