Buying a Porsche to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary
Amazing. A 94-year-old wife and 92-year-old husband purchased a Porsche. It was their first Porsche at over 90 years old.
Her husband, Derek Evans (92), said, "I think I've always been adventurous," while his wife, Audrey (94), said, "Neither of us are racers," but added, "But we enjoy the power and comfort."
The car purchased was a crayon-colored Macan.
Apparently, the purchase was made to commemorate the couple's 70th wedding anniversary.
Derek apparently receives personal training at the gym twice a week, which shows he's in very good health, but it's still quite impressive that he's finally got his first Porsche at over 90 years old.
I'm very sorry, but my first thought is, "Is this okay?"
Even if it wasn't a Porsche, it would be dangerous for someone over 90 years old to drive a car, and on top of that, a Porsche accelerates incredibly fast when you step on the gas...and it was my first time driving a Porsche.
However, as if there was no need to worry, the couple is enjoying driving the Macan and is already planning their next purchase, which is a Taycan.
Derek was previously a bank manager and has also been involved in the development of the British hang gliding world, managing the team that won the World Championships and even meeting the late Queen Elizabeth II.
He has flown it himself and said, "There are no engines or noise, and you can just experience the incredible feeling of flying."
Recently, he has also discovered a new hobby: Northern Soul dancing.
I had never heard of Northern Soul dance before, so I looked up some videos and saw that it had some very light and nimble steps, so it's amazing that he was able to start dancing at the age of 92 or 94!
He just loves to drive around, and Derek says of the Macan, "The cornering is amazing, but there's also a sense of complete safety, and it feels like you can drive forever."
Wow, you're so young.
I also know (I'm afraid to say this) a former racing driver who is now over 80 years old, and he still enjoys buying and driving sports cars, so I don't think it's right to judge someone based on age alone.
Still, I guess it's a bit scary for someone over 90 to drive their first Porsche.
