Not an actual car, but an official rendering by Porsche
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Turbo model, Porsche has released new images of a "Porsche 911 Turbo with a tartan fabric exterior."
This car has a tartan pattern not only on the exterior but also on the interior.
However, having a car body made of fabric is obviously not very practical, so here is a rendering by Porsche and Porsche Design.
Still, it's well done ^^
How the Porsche Turbo got its tartan look
The reason why Porsche decided to use tartan for the interior of the turbo model in the first place was that it was inspired by a pair of tartan trousers owned by the chief designer at the time (Anatole Lapine).
This was 50 years ago, and it seems like it was decided on a whim, with someone just thinking, "Oh, I like the pattern on those pants. Why don't we go with those?" (laughs), but it's interesting that the tartan pattern that was decided on back then is still being used as a new piece (such as Porsche Lifestyle) in the Turbo model collection, 50 years later.
By the way, the chief designer, Mr. Lapine, is known for designing the Porsche 928, 924, and 944 models, and he also worked on the styling of the 911 G series.
If the trousers he was wearing at the time had a star pattern, I wonder if the interior of the Turbo model would have been decorated with a star... (probably not, lol).
Porsche 911 Turbo's tartan interior
The tartan fabric, intended for clothing, was not durable enough for use in car interiors, but Porsche stylist Dorothea Müller-Goodwyn found a German supplier who offered the right solution that met all the light- and abrasion-resistant requirements, allowing the material to be brought into production for the Turbo's interior.
The first time a Porsche used tartan on its interior was in 1973 with the 911 RSR Turbo Concept. This was a preview of the 911 Turbo that would come out a year later, and would go on to become the production model.
- Black Watch: Blue, green, black
- McLaughlin: Red and Blue
- Mackenzie: beige, red, blue, white, olive green
Three different tartan-patterned interiors are available.
The silver-bodied 911 Turbo No. 1 with brick-colored leather seats, given to Louise Piëch by Porsche for her 70th birthday in 1974, had an interior finished in McLaughlin tartan.
And the latest Porsche model with a tartan patterned interior is the recently announced 911 Turbo 50 Years, a limited edition of 1,974 units.
That being said, the rendering images released this time are really well done.
I would probably believe it if they told me it was actually made as a display car.
