Let's start with America
2023 Munich Motor Show (IAA MOBILITY 2023), Karl Dums, Senior Project Leader for Porsche Synthetic Fuels (eFuels), told CAR Magazine, "Porsche will be synthetic by the end of the decade. "We are aiming to launch a fuel, and we believe it could be launched within 10 years."
The first sales location is scheduled to be in the United States, and since there are many subsidies, it seems that they plan to find investors and secure competitive production costs.
When I asked Dums whether synthetic fuels would be commercially competitive with conventional gasoline and diesel, he became cautious about answering.
"The price at the gas station is very complicated because you don't pay for its value, you pay for how much it's worth to you." is a complicated thing because you will not pay what it's worth, but what it's worth for you.)
That's what the answer was.
yeah? What is it?
In other words, "rather than the price of gasoline itself, eFuel is a valuable and necessary thing for me, and it is what I pay for it, so I can't easily compare prices alone."
By the way, nothing has been finalized at this time, but one of the things being discussed within the European Union is that there is talk about taxes imposed on synthetic fuels.
Normally, the tax on fuel is set according to its CO2 emissions, but in the case of synthetic fuels, the actual CO2 emissions are zero. There may or may not be a possibility that the amount can be returned to consumers.
Porsche is creating synthetic fuel because it wants to show that there are other possibilities for reducing CO2 emissions.
Porsche has invested approximately $100 million in synthetic fuels (of which $75 million is in HIF Global), building a synthetic fuel production facility in Chile that will already produce 130,000 liters of fuel by the end of 2022.
In the future, Porsche and HIF will further expand production to 55 million liters per year by 2025 and 550 million liters by 2027.
By the way, I can't even imagine whether this 550 million liters amount is too much or too little, so if you look at it as a comparison, for example, the amount of gasoline consumed in the UK alone in 2021 will be over 13 billion liters. , Even if the production of synthetic fuel exceeds 500 million liters, you can see that it is a very small amount compared to the world.
However, Porsche is not aiming to "replace all gasoline with synthetic fuel", but "I am trying to prove that there are other ways to reduce CO2 besides electrification".
Michael Stiener, head of research and development at Porsche:
``We want to show that synthetic fuel is a viable technology for certain quantities.''
"At least our job as R&D is to show what is technically possible, and the next step is to convince people that we don't have to ban everything."
It is said that.
Porsche believes that synthetic fuels can be applied in motor sports, vehicle testing, the Porsche Experience Center, etc. Porsche's classic car & hybrid models will be able to run almost carbon-neutral in the future, and gasoline It is believed that the 911 engine will also be able to run carbon neutral in the future.
Another advantage is that, unlike electric chargers, synthetic fuels can be used with conventional gas station systems.
Anyway, I would like to support that Porsche is standing up and fighting well for the future, which is not just "abolish gasoline cars, only electric cars".
And while doing so, I would like to expect that the situation will move in a good direction for gasoline vehicles from various other aspects as well.
