I want to do this! Porsche uses drones to show you the ideal racing line

Posted: Posted:

Recently, Porsche filed a patent application, and the contents of the patent application were exactly what made me think, "I want to do that, I really hope it becomes a reality!"

The patent application, filed on November 10, 2025, and published on December 31, is about a system that projects the optimal driving line on a circuit into the driver's field of vision.

In other words...if you've ever played Gran Turismo or something like that, you'll know that when you drive a car on a circuit in the game, there's a function that allows you to display a reference racing line on the circuit surface on the screen, telling you, ``This is the line you should drive on.''

The subject of this patent application is to actually project this onto the surface of a real circuit where real cars are actually running in the real world.

Moreover, rather than using a head-up display to display the racing line on the windshield, the system is designed to use a drone that flies in front of the car and projects an actual driving line onto the course, allowing the driver to see the racing line right in front of them, just like when playing Gran Turismo.

Of course, there are many things to consider, such as how a drone would project lines onto the circuit surface in bright sunlight, or whether it could fly around the course leading an actual, super fast Porsche, but if this really could be realized, it would sound like it would be incredibly fun and educational, so I really, really want to try it!

Personally, I don't think there's any need to race around the circuit at your fastest speed when using this drone technology.

Even if you are driving at a slow speed (for example, up to 60 km/h), if it displays the most ideal racing line on the road surface in front of you while you are driving a real car on an actual circuit, I think you will be able to memorize a good line by driving along that line many times.

After experiencing the racing line slowly and repeatedly, you can then increase your speed without the drone projection. If this is truly a feasible technology, I would definitely recommend that people try it.

It's amazing to be able to visually learn the ideal line while driving.

It was the patent content that I wanted most to be realized among the patents that Porsche has filed so far.
