Porsche Taycan recalled in the US due to risk of fire caused by short circuit in high-voltage battery

Posted: Posted:

Charge the battery by 80% until it is known whether it is subject to a recall.

*At this point, this is still a story in the United States, and it is not known whether the Taycans in Japan are affected.*

In the United States, a new recall has been issued for the Porsche Taycan.

The message was, "There is a possibility of a short circuit in the battery module, which could result in a fire."

The recall affects 27,527 vehicles, all of which were produced between October 21, 2019 and February 1, 2024 and are equipped with LG battery packs manufactured in Poland.

Taycans produced after April 3, 2024 are not subject to the recall due to measures implemented during production (there is no mention of the period from February 2 to April 2, 2024, so at this time it is unknown what models were produced during that period).

The diagnostic equipment won't be available until the first quarter of 2025

Vehicles subject to recall will be given a software update, and if any problems are discovered as a result of the update, the battery pack will be replaced free of charge.

However, the advanced diagnostic software used for this diagnosis is not expected to be available until the first quarter of 2025, so the earliest it will be possible to determine whether the batteries in the recalled vehicles are OK is sometime in the first quarter of 2025.

Therefore, in this recall, the advice is to "charge the battery up to 80%" until the battery can be replaced (or it is determined that it is OK).

It is unclear whether Taycans imported into Japan will be subject to the same recall in the future, but until that is clear, it may be safer to limit charging to 80% just to be safe?

By the way, it seems that this problem has not actually occurred so far, but since the responsibility for the problem lies with LG Energy Solution, LG will likely suffer a considerable blow this time.

I apologize for being persistent, but as of now this recall has only been issued in the US, so I don't know about the situation in Japan.
